Can any Navy Moms of Officers tell me if there is a special, commemorative gift that they gave to their son or daughter when they commissioned?  Or, any ideas to make this event really special?  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

I would say that's fairly normal to feel that way when your new husband is gone.....or even if you've been married for a long time! This takes getting used to.....I'm saying that to try to convince myself, too, as this will be difficult for me when my son leaves. I am missing him already.
We bought our daughter a very nice pen and pencil set with her name and rank enscribed. We also bought her the sword which is with us for safe keeping for now. I am getting ready to purchase a new pen and pencil set with her new rank when she is promoted in a couple of months because she says she loves to use the pen.

I think any gift is appropriate and appreciated whether it is practical, or sentimental or traditional.
My son will graduate OCS in May, we are thinking about giving him his grandfathers WWII Navy ring, and also his WWII dog tags. We are going to have them both professionally polished and the dog tags put on a chain. Does this sound appropriate?
I think it sounds great! What a wonderful gift for him to have to remind him of his grandfather.
Family treasures are priceless. These are so appropriate and meaningful. Beautiful gesture.
Oh way2go, that is a precious idea!!! I love the sentimental gifts.
Thanks everyone, his grandfather is going to be there to pin him. I think we have him talked into wearing some of his medals including his purple heart, he is 86 and will be in a wheelchair, but he is set on making the trip from NC. He is a WWII vet and also a Korean War vet, still carrying bullets and shrapnel in his body from when his ship was blown up by kamakaze planes. Boy he has the stories to tell, my son is enthralled with him, and grandpa can't even talk about his grandson without crying with so much pride.
That is wonderful! Where does he live in NC? I live in NC..........Greensboro.
Gifts:
at Commissioning I sent suggested gift list to all the relativties sort of like a"Bridal registray" as you would. I was very careful to add gifts in all price ranges. I also gave the relatives the choice to send me the money and purchased or I would order the items b/c I was really the one who new exactly what he needed a bit of work but well worth it
My son got everything he wanted or needed.
The Sword the sword case
Rolling wardrobe
The Medal Box to keep his Boards and pins in (sold at the uniform catoluges)
For Marines the travel cover for his cover. This I saw Marines on a fight once have this and had to order from a Marine Uniform Catalogue
Bose Headsets
a roll of SBA coins but the commertative one for him to keep also a coin of the year he was born, to give away.
Frame for the commissioning and degree, to keep it nice and clean and now hangs in his office.
The Hat Toss photo.
Gas,food, and WalMart, gift cards to be used to assist in his relocation, setting up a new home was pricey
all the photos of Graduation
ad in the back of the "Lucky Bag"
The little cousins gave Mc Donald and Burger King gift cards which I think they liked giving just as much as my Mid enjoyed getting.
New tires for his car to drive to new location
Jiffy lube gift cards for his first year.
a new Computer
a good digital camera
as you can see we had a large family at commissioning I had over 75 people for three days.
So Ihope this helps and when in doubt Cash is very good also!
Some of these gifts are Academy specfic but they all can be translated to similar items for your needs.
and of course the always needed AIRLINE TICKETS to come home on leave.

Have fun with this and enjoy even the smallest gift is just as appricated as the big ones.
When our son was commissioned, the only one who purchased a gift were us, his parents. We purchased a very nice garment bag for his uniforms from the marlow white company - it has a 20-30 year guarantee and it was something necessary to protect that investment. Of course, we celebrated with a nice dinner. Even the relatives who attended did not bring a gift and it was true of many other families there so don't feel it is necessary to bring gifts.
Wow.........great suggestions! One question......What is a "lucky bag"? and the gift for it?
Thanks!

Jane, I'm not sure we are going to have many people there either. Thanks for the suggestion as to where to purchase the garment bag. I'll take a look.
The "Lucky Bag" is the USNA yearbook (my dad's a grad)
