Okay, my Husband is currently at Sub School in Groton, CT, we live together there. He is schedule to graduate next month. He got his orders in today and he was selected for a Boat stationed in Georgia, which is what we wanted. However, the Boat is in dry dock in Virgina...his orders say he has to report to Virgina  first and nothing else. We have no idea where I am going now....Do they move me with him if the Boat is going to be in Virgina for a year or so? Do they just stick me in Georgia and say wait it out till the Boat gets back, and who know how long that'll be? What is going to happen to our household stuff? He was supposed to take a Navigation class in Georgia when we first got there but is he not going to do that now? Please help me...I'm freaking out :(

Hmm, I'm still glad to know someone who will be there too :)  I'm seriously considering buying a house since we'll be there for so long, it's an investment and a mortgage is the same as rent.  A house would have more space too, everything in VA is small!

Hopefully these changes won't affect things with my son, we're still on the East Coast and nowhere near ND.  I just need to petition the state with a motion to change my son's permanent residence, the state doesn't care where as long as it's in the best interest of the child (and staying with me and my husband is best.)

Me too! I know another gal whose Husband is stationed there with surface fleet. Our Husbands were in Basic together.

We can't afford to buy a house, at least not yet...But I did find one that we really like we can rent for a decent  amount with a fenced yard and really nice. As soon as his orders come in we are gonna call the guy and see about setting up a date to go view it in person. Indeed, small and expensive! Some of the prices are outrageous...

Oh good! I hope it all goes smoothly for you.

So my Husband got his orders (as long as they don't change :p) and we are going to Virginia in two weeks. He is gonna be on the same boat again as your Husband too. How lucky to have it happen twice lol :)
I live in VA now....have you decided whether you will stay on base or off base? If you live off base, I do not recommend living in Norfolk.  There are a lot of shady areas there.  I would recommend staying in Chesapeake, VA Beach, or on this side of the water in York County or Hampton.  But be careful which neighborhoods in Hampton.  If you need help let me know!  My husband graduates boot camp on May 13, then is heading to CT for sub school.

Thank you for the suggestions so much! Yes, we do plan on living off base I've heard the housing there isn't a good neighborhood and small, which is understandable with how many people they have stationed there. There is a house we really are interested in if it stays available until we get there. It's in Portsmouth. Is that a decent place? We don't have kids yet but plan on trying here maybe a year or two so I would like it to be a place I would trust for my eventual growing family.

Will you be going to Groton with him after BESS?

Yes, Portsmouth is a decent city.  I don't know much about it, but my dad said that it just depends on what section of the city you live in.  The best places to raise kids around here are York County, Chesapeake, and VA Beach.  YC has the best schools IMO.
And Yes, Hopefully we will be able to move to Groton with him after BESS.  I guess it just depends on the job he gets, but I have heard that almost all of the jobs in SECF have schools long enough for families to move up there with them.

I don't "think" we are supposed to be ther long enough to worry about schools but if anything maybe preschool, lol. Goot to know about the area though, thank you :) We are originally from Nevada so this is way different for us.

Yeah, I think most the SECF do too. Most of the other buddies of my Husband have their wives here and they are SECF. I hope you can :)

Thanks! I do too.
While I don't like Groton period I wouldn't have changed my mind in coming here. Just being able to have your life back in order and him come home almost everyday is well worth it. But if you do come here, especially if you are here in the fall, you HAVE to take a drive through Stonington. It's about 24 minutes from Groton and a beautiful drive. I didn't get to go there when the leaves were changing but I wish I had so badly...Didn't find the place till later. Driving there you go on a two lane road with stone walls on each side and then trees on either side making a whole canopy the entire length of the back road off the freeway until you get to main street. And there are some beautiful houses there too.
Do you live on base?
We live in Trident Park. The Navy contracts with Balfour Beatty Communities for their housing here. Trident park is the older townhouses and about a 2-5 min drive to the base depending.
