Ladies,

I don't know what to do and hoping one of you have encountered this in the past.  To make a very long story short, my daughter has "my" car now in San Diego where she's stationed for the next 3+ years. (I bought the car from her to get a lower interest rate than what she had) I am registering it here in Illinois (INSURANCE MUCH CHEAPER). Ok all good right. Well, every other year or so Illinois residents have to get an emissions test done before you can renew your registration! OMG! HOW will this happen with the car in California?? Ideas? Suggestions? No, I will not have her drive it out here every other year for this purpose either.  Does Illinois do anything with this in regard to the person being in active military? I'm stressing out over this.  TIA!

Theresa... don't panic... I had the same exact situation when my daughter was stationed in Lemoore and her car was registered to me.  From the state of Illinois website:

  • If you have an Illinois registered vehicle but are out of state, your vehicle must be in compliance with the emissions regulations of the place you are in. Alternatively, you can have your vehicle tested out of state. If your vehicle is located in a place that does not require emissions testing, you are eligible to be exempted from the current test cycle. You can contact the Illinois EPA at (847) 758-3400 or check the compliance forms.

OMG Paula you are a life saver!! Thank you so much for this information! So she can just get a smog test done in California right?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

My son just did this.  She can call the DMV in Illinois.  They will send, e-mail or fax  info to her, he then took it to the emissions place in CT where he is stationed, they sent the info to IL to update his records.Because he couldn't get his license renewed without the emissions test, his license was suspended during deployment.  He had to take care of all of this when he got back. There are steps for states that don't have emissions testing, and if you are in the military there, you can be exempt from this testing.  Now, reading further into your post, that YOU are the owner of the car I'm not sure that any of this applies. My son bought his car when he was stationed in South Carolina. He bought a 2010 car in 2011 and he went through USAA insurance and got a great rate, with his home state of registration being Illinois.
