Introduce yourself, we are getting so big! I can't keep up. As short or long as you'd like. I want to learn everyone's names and find out about your sailors - where they are going, what SHIP they are on, on base or on the seas, and what you hope to get out of this.

Ah yeah, I was thinking that. Just was confused about the radius. At 80 miles it would have been iffy, hence him telling them where he was going.

I'm still off to shop for apartments or a roomy. Something that's cheap enough for him to have a weekend house.
Good day! My name is Tammy and my son Hunter left Monday 7/27/09 for BC. I'm trying to learn as much as possible about his rate, so thought this was a good place to start. I've read about it, but thought this group could help me learn more.
You'll find alot of great help here Tammy. We'd encourage you to read thru the various discussion threads, tons of info from job description to where the C schools might be. I know right now you probably will just be happy to see his first letter!!! Hang in there and let us know what questions you might have.
Thank you. How will they decide who is FC and or ET? Will he know which one he'll be assigned while in boot camp, or will they wait until he's completed boot camp? It looks like he'll be going to A school for sure in Great Lakes...Maybe even C school too. Anyone know?
I believe they tell them at or near the end of BC. Both FC and ET A schools are in GL. I do not THINK there are ANY C schools at GL. My son had wanted to be FC and they assigned him to ET. He was upset at the time but now he LOVES his job. He is on the USS MOMSEN.

Here is a photo of him when they were pulling into port for the Seattle Seafair on Wednesday:

How nice you got a photo Melinda!

Tammy, our son's contract was written that he would meet with a classify in boot camp on the 3rd day, 3rd week of bc. Anyone in AECF was called into an office and basically told...you're an ET and you are an FC. The good news is both are great jobs with lots of schooling on the front end. Our son wanted the FC rate because his dad was an FC for 10 years so he just happen to get it but there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to it as far as we can tell. Or let's just say - the Navy hasn't shared that with us...yet! LOL

A school is definitely in Great Lakes and the good news is the school goes on Holiday standdown so he will be able to take leave at Christmas. C school is NOT in GL - and it really depends on what rate it gets.

For FCs - they can go to San Diego, DamnNeck, VA and Dahlgren, VA (near DC) our son graduated from Dahlgren this morning. He started his process in Feb. 08.
Thanks for all the great info. I'm sure he'll want FC too, but like you said, who knows. That's nice to know he'll get leave for Christmas. He can drive his car back! We'll have to get it winterized! Us South Texas people don't see much snow -- EVER!
Mary:

My son is in his second week of BC, so we don't know if he's FC or ET yet. However, I have another question about A school and thought by reading your comments you may be able to answer them. I tried getting the answer by reading through all the comments, but didn't get a straight answer for my specific question. What causes a person to be "put on hold" during or before A school? It was my understanding that by my son signing on as AECF in Aug. '08 through DEP, he was guaranteed a spot in A school. By reading comments, it seems as though some people are put "on hold" right out of BC. Is that because they were just assigned AECF in BC or something? Your information is greatly appreciated!
Tammy, when your son signed his contract it does guarantee him either an ET or FC rating as long as he completes the school and all the requirements of being a sailor along the way.

It does not give him a guarantee start or finish date for school. Most of the school for this program at Great Lakes is self-paced, some finish sooner - some finish later and sometimes the classes just don't move as fast as one might like. Therefore "holds" can happen meaning they are just waiting for a seat to open up for your sailor. It has nothing to do with the assignment at bootcamp, they have been assigning the rates for the last couple of years in boot camp.

There have also been some budget issues and for awhile orders were put on "hold' meaning sailors not being sent to their next command or school and I'm not sure if that added to the slow down at A school or not. Those orders are now being processed and should not be effecting A school holds.

With all branches of the service, patience is magic word - espcially true for A school students this year. Other rates are also experiencing substantial holds as well.
Thank you once again. That helps clarify some things for me.
OOPS!!! I put in the wrong thing for the link to the photo...here is the right one. He is right in front.

Cool. Thanks for sharing! I'm glad he loves his job. I'm sure Hunter will love whatever they give him. Sounds like either ET or FC is sort of a specialized field, so it should be challenging whatever he gets...I know that's what he's hoping for anyway!
