There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Courtney, you have come to the right place for answers! You will find there are a number of wives in GL with children supporting their sailors while they are in A school. C school is not in GL nor will you know the length or location of C school until A school is almost over or sometimes...after it is over! I'm sure your hubby is missing those 79 degree days and his family!
Oh...yah...your look'n at one right here. We recently drove from Riverside CA to Gurnee IL with three little ones in tow. My advice is that your husband fill out his Live ashore papers ASAP. The Navy will pay for your move because your husband will be here for a long time. San Diego is a very nice place. I'm used to the wormer weather myself but I am really loving all this snow. Even though it's FREEKING cold here it is still great to be able to experience all this snow. The kids love it.
hi Courtney! My husband is in GL on hold waiting to class up for ET A school. We are planning on moving in a couple of weeks. I am going down next Sat to look at some apartments. I have 2 girls, ages 5 1/2 and 3. He had PIR on 11/20/09 and he just passed his phase 2 tests this last week, so now we can move up. I don't think they can live off base with you until they have phase 2 liberty. I live in MN, so it will not be such a huge move for me. Good luck with your move!
Hi Courtney! We haven't moved yet, but we're planning on moving up there as soon as we are able to. His PIR is 2/12. I have 2 kids also, they will be 5 and 2 when we move. Plus a big dog and cat to boot! From what I've learned on here, your husband should submit a "live ashore" package as soon as he gets to phase 2- which takes about 3 weeks. Then after it is approved, ya'll can move up with him. We're in Charleston, and it will be a huge move, but my kids are miserable without their daddy. They are both daddy's girls! Depending on the hold time after his PIR, he could very well be up there a year just for A school, and then C school is somewhere else. It's worth 2 moves so close together for us to be with him.

Good Luck!!
Just curious, for those of you who are attending PIR in March ( I am not sure which day yet --- either March 5th or 12th), are any of you in San Diego? I am planning on going solo and was wondering if someone wanted to be travel buddies?? Or if not in SD, maybe driving to RTC together from the airport? Am I being a little bit neurotic here? I am kind of nervous to go by myself. My husband told me only two guests were allowed to come to PIR, is that true? I am just trying to plan in advance and deciding whether to fly into Midway or O'Hare, get a rental or take a cab, etc. Does anyone have any advice? I know it will still be snowing in March, right? I really didn't want to travel that far with the kids in the snow. Thanks!!
-Courtney
The rule is 4 people per graduate. He will be asked to write down his 4 people. Do NOT fly into Midway. It's on the south side of Chicago and harder to get up here to GL than O'hare. O'hare is about a 45 minute drive and it's straight off the highway and very easy to get to Great Lakes from. I suggest the Navy lodge to stay at. It's a mile from the base and not expensive I *believe* about 65 with no taxes. I personally have stayed there a few times and I like it! https://www.nexnet.nexweb.org/pls/nexlodge/process_find_lodge_form I would suggest booking far ahead of time because it books up fast for graduations. Also I would suggest renting a car. Things around great lakes are spread out. Like the mall is a 15 minute drive from base. I have been to two separate graduations and have lived up here since May. It might be snowing but if you can take your kids I would HIGHLY suggest it!!!!!! This is an experience that they will never forget and I know your husband would be over the moon to see his kids and for them to see him in this special time of his life. Kids under 12 I believe don't count as extra guests. Good Luck!!! If you have any other questions just let me know!
Thanks so much! This helps a lot! Now, I will probably bring the kids (both under 12) and then my mom to help with the kids. When does he have to write down his 4 people? I guess I will be able to talk to him before that. Oh and I guess here is a big question. Should I start looking into military discounts for the flight and car rental? I don't have a military ID yet though, Where do I go to get that anyway? I am so clueless...:/

I appreciate this group sooo much!!!

-Courtney
he writes down the 4 people his first 2 weeks... If there are changes need to that he will need to submit it through security. I started looking for my hotel after i got my id so it is up to you when you look for the stuff but do not wait till the last min or you will be stranded with no flight and no car. You will get a form in the mail about a month in and you will be directed to a phone number. or you can call public affairs at 847-688-2405. Public affairs is loacated In the great lakes area. They know stuff that needs to be known. If you have questions that you can not get answered you can call them. a website that is very helpful is bootcamp.navy.mil that is where you get your gate pass for graduation (10 days before graduation.) Also dont panic if you got get your first paycheck until a month in, because that is how they do it. I was told that i would get it on the 1st and 15th and i didnt and then finally a month later i got a months worth of pay at once. it was nice. If you have any questions that i did not answer feel free to message me.
Hi Loving and living life

I have a question for you about pay and bah. My husband left January 7th so does that mean that he will get paid febuary 1st? For about a months worth? And then the 1st and the 15th everymonth there after? And will that also include bah?
Yes that means he will be paid on Feb 1st, as your first paycheck for a months worth. You are correct on the first and 15th however the 1st is for your bah + pay and then the other (15th) is just Pay.
Thank you living and loving life I was not sure and I wanted to double check.
My husband's pay is always split up. So on the 1st we get his pay and half his bah then on the 15th the same. His paychecks are always exactly the same on each pay date.

Josh's wife- It might take a while for them to be completely the same just because you will be getting separation pay also.
