There seems to be so many of you lately!!! It is wonderful that you will have each other's support while going thru the process together.

Thought I would start this thread so you can at least connect and share stories together. Seems like there is a fair amount of you in Great Lakes and just as many more trying to decide if you can more to Great Lakes.

Hi April, I am in almost the exact same situation as you. Except I live on the opposite coast. I live in the Norfolk, Virginia area. We were in the process of moving to GL, he had the first part of his live ashore approved and then he classed up for ATT. I went to visit him this past weekend as well and after looking at a few apartments and talking more in depth with him, we both decided that it would probably just make more sense for us to not move. It was a VERY difficult decision to make for both of us, but I have two kids as well (1 yr old and a 4 yr old) and a very good, very flexable job. Both of our families are here as well as all of our friends so the support system is huge. That said, the decision was still horrible to make. I miss him already and his kids miss him as well as him missing them. The decision was based on his future class schedule (he is ET so most likely he will be in night school once A school starts) and the fact that the hold time between ATT and A school is getting shorter. If her were in night school and with an every 4 day duty rotation, we would hardly ever see him and with the school being as intense as it is, I want him to be able to concentrate on school and not feel bad if he feels like he needs to go to open learning instead of coming home to us. It is really tough and the thought of living without him for so long is a very imposing one. I am still wondering if we made the right decision and i do feel that in the long run, it will be, but the next year will be a difficult one. Another huge reason for the decision is that C school is not as long as A school and the navy will not move us until his orders are up. I didn't want to have to stay in GL without him until he was done with C school especially since most likely his C school and possibly his orders will bring him right back here where we live. Our house is paid for and although it is small, the apartments we looked at were smaller. I don't know if this helps you whatsoever, but I thought it might help to know you are absolutely not alone and the difficulty of the decision is hard no matter what you decide. We are going to try bi-monthly visits for the girls to see him and i will try to come alone in between. Plus he is going to try to come home for a few days between ATT & A school. I have kind of come to the conclusion that living in limbo is a job I have taken on now when we made the decision to become a navy family. We did it for many reasons and financially was of course among the top reasons, for us to move and possibly have to bear the burden of coming out of pocket to move back just seems counterproductive for our future goals. I of course may regret this decision in the long run, but as it is one we researched and came to together, I think it will be better for us in the long run....
What a difficult but wise decision that you and your hubby made MistyCB. The family support, the flexible job and the home that is paid for are such valuable considerations and so many of our sailors do end up at Norfolk for school and the fleet.

Every family has to make a choice based on their personal situation but we know this decision was very hard for you just the same. I hope his time in GL passes quickly for you and your girls.
thank you.... Definitely something I need to hear. I hope it passes quickly as it truly is agonizing right now : )
Misty, after reading your post I feel so much better. I really want to live in GL with my husband (we have no children) but I think that financially I would be wiser to stay living in Michigan. Thankfully I am only a 5 hour drive away so I can see him at least once a month. The largest factor in him joining the Navy was for a secure and steady pay check and the last 2 months have been great for us financially. The day he left for boot camp, I moved from Florida back to Michigan where we are from to save money. As hard as it is to want to live near him, I just know that is a bad decision for us financially. I really appreciate your story. I am still undecided in what I am going to do...listen to my heart or my head???
Hey Karissa,
I live in the Eagle Ridge Apartments, they're in Waukegan. A lot of military personnel live here- ranging from RDCs, couples with kids, couples without kids, and couples with dogs! You can also look into base housing-not sure if they allow dogs or not though.. Forest Pointe Apartments, Northgate/Northridge- I forgot what it's called. If you look through previous pages, people have posted about the apartments they live in and such. My friend has a one bedroom with a dog and I believe she pays somewhere in the mid $800s. Good luck with your search!
You can go to www.rent.com and type in your specific requirements and it will pull up tons of apartments which you can sort in many ways. If I were going to move I would move to Eagle Ridge, I viewed the property last weekend and it is really nice, however there are many places that are nice. Stay away from North Chicago though - not so good and Linden apartments/townhouses is in a very bad area. If your husband doesnt' mind a bit of a commute, Kenosha, WI has some gorgeous places, in very nice areas and the prices are a lot less. You can find a very nice place, just pick a few and go view them if you can.....
there is a special running at forest point its actually 915.00 a month!
im so glad to have found this group are any of you in the va area? ill be moving there within the next couple of months..
I am in Portsmouth Virginia.... Lived in this area most of my life.... I can answer just about anything you may need : )
well we find out next wk the place we are going in va so i may be asking lots of questions lol :D
I am a hometown Virginia girl! I live right outside of Norfolk and will be glad to answer any questions you may have.... I have lived here since i was 3 months old.
Try Gurnee or Libertyville, there are some really nice areas but I'm not sure about the rent prices. I have friend who's married and has a dog they live in Gurnee. I will find out the name and how much they pay and let you know. Good luck with the search...
