Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

See page 4 of the Family Guide. Use standard letter sized envelopes in plain white. Don't put anything on it or in it to draw attention to your Recruit. No noisy cards. Some RDC's permit newspaper clippings and others do not. Yes, photos are OK. Remember they don't have a lot of room for storage, so consider printing several pictures on your paper and writing your letter around the pictures.

I was sending my son newspaper clippings of the NBA playoffs and when he called me he told me to stop:(. I also heard one of the boys in his division had perfume sprayed on a letter he received and the whole division got in trouble. Keep it simple, letters and mellow cards.

Some copy the info from the newspaper's website into letters rather than sending clippings. My Sailor's Division was not permitted newspaper or magazine clippings and he almost got in trouble for a coloring book page that a friend sent to him because the RDC thought it was a newspaper clipping. He did have to share the picture with EVERYONE in the Division and was not allowed to sit back down or do anything else until EVERY last one had seen it (and commented on it). At least he and the others didn't get extra PT. So be careful what you send.

Well, I was going to send a page of printed photos but I am kind of leary of that now. I dont want to draw any unnecessary attention to him.. What do I do?? Oh, and I wrote I love you on it! So do I sent it or not???

I sent pictures printed on the pages of my letters in nearly every letter I sent my daughter when she went through boot camp 2-1/2 years ago and there were no problems - it doesn't resemble newsprint at all. I'm doing the same thing now that my son is in boot camp. I do try to make sure a page with no photos is folded around the one with photos so they don't show through the envelope, but I'm paranoid that way! Besides trying to minimize the bulk in the envelope so that the RDC doesn't want to look at it, its a good idea to insert the photo right into the letter because they have VERY LITTLE storage room and every non-uniform item must be kept in one tiny drawer. They'll want to keep all of their correspondence to read over and over, so we try to make sure there's less bulk so more letters will fit in that drawer.

That is very helpful and I do appreciate your response. Do you know/remember when she called home? He left out on June 20th and I was told by his recruiter that he would call within 2 weeks and he hasnt yet. So I am hoping he will call next weekend but I am not sure. Also, do you know if it will be on a weekday or weekend??

We have a close friend of ours that has 2 year old twins. She had them color a picture for my son today and was going to enclose it with a short note she wrote my son. Should she hold off on the the coloring until I get my first phone call?
My son shipped out on the 27th. He's on Ship 07 Div 271 :)
I, too, was wondering if the phone calls come on certain days of the week or at certain times?

If the colored page is on white paper, it won't be a problem. If the colored page is on a coloring book page, it MAY cause similar issues to those my Sailor experienced. Being from children, it most likely won't be a problem though. The colored coloring page for my Sailor was from a young woman and the RDC was aware of that, so I think it was the combination of it being on the type of paper it was on and who it was from that resulted in the situation.
The calls could come on any day. My Sailor was in a Division that earned several extra calls and I got most of mine on Saturday, but also got some on weekdays.

Thank you so much! I got my first letter yesterday and obviously he had not received my letter yet. He wanted wallet sized photos and what he didnt realize was that I had copied a few pics of us all and sent them on a sheet of paper in the last letter I sent this past week. Glad I did now!
