My son was admitted to the hospital today with some bumps they fear are chicken pox. (He's already had chicken pox, but I've had it 3 times so.....regardless.....) He said they plan on keeping him in the hospital until Thursday. My husband is super worried that he wont graduate on time now. Does anyone know how this works? How much time can they miss and still graduate on time?

It's OK if he does not graduating ON TIME. Even if he misses his PIR, he'll still be a US Sailor. He will have plenty other opportunities to celebrate a milestone. The important thing is that this is a condition that does not disqualify him from being in the Navy.

By the way, my son was going thru Officer Candidate School. He was awful at shining his shoes and he could never keep those stray threads from peeping out of the seams on his pants. He missed passing some inspection by one point - did great on the physical and academic stuff (he was one of the best in his class). His graduation was rolled back for 3 weeks (with the next class as oppose to weekly for enlisted). He was irate and pissed. With his next class, he tutored a number of prior enlisted candidates on the academic stuff (especially math) and they help him with his ironing and shoe shining. It all worked out. You have my permission to relay this to your husband so the two of you can take it in stride if your son is rolled back.

Thank you son in advance and good luck in the future.

Thank you so much for the information. Honestly my husbands concern is more the financial end of it then just him graduating a week later. The plane tickets were $1300 for he and I and our younger son. He asked the airline what's involved with the insurance because we paid an extra $150 for that incase we had to cancel. My husband specifically asked if we'd be covered if the grad date got changed and the airline said it's more for something like if there's a death or something catastrophic, and you have to have proof. They don't make it easy!

My son told me this wouldn't delay him, but he has a habit of believing what he hopes to be true. His motto is "it'll work out." Although I think/hope boot camp is making him take things more seriously now! You must be very proud of your son, sounds like you raised a good Sailor! Thank you again for replying, I appreciate it.

It isn't a matter of time, but of what they miss and need to make up.  They probably have him in the hospital for isolation instead of SIQ in his own bed.   No way to know precisely, sorry.

Let us know what happens!

Yes, he said they whisked him out of there in a hurry because they were very concerned about it being something contagious. He was told that there was a chicken pox outbreak a few divisions ago and that it was a huge hassle. Thank you for the reply.

There were others with chicken pox recently who did have PIR on time, but they came down with them in the first few weeks at the RTC.  Up to a week out does not usually set them back, especially if they are able to continue studying the bookwork while they are in the hospital, but it all depends on what is going on with the division and how prepared the recruit was before BC.  Your SR will keep you informed if he is moved to another Division with a change of PIR date.

When is PIR?  Here are the current PIR groups.  Click on the date of PIR and then join to connect with others with loved ones training with your SR.

PIR: Oct 5, 2012              TG 47 - 12 Divisions (317-326, 821 & 947)

PIR: Oct 12, 2012            TG 48 - 14 Divisions (327-338, 822 & 948)

PIR: Oct 19, 2012            TG 49 - 7 Division (339-344 & 949)

PIR: Oct 26, 2012            TG 50 - 7 Divisions (345-350 & 950)

PIR: Nov 2, 2012            TG 51 - 13 Divisions (351–362 & 951)

PIR: Nov 9, 2012             TG 52 - 12 Divisions (363–372, 823 & 952)

PIR: Nov 16, 2012           TG 01 - 9 Divisions (001-008 & 901)

PIR: Nov 21, 2012           TG 02 - 11 Divisions (009-018 & 902)

If you do have to change the tickets, you can try to get something from the hospital or PAO indicating that it was an illness that caused you to change your flight.  (For others Southwest allows you to make a change without charge.)

Thank you for the information, I feel more reassured now. His PIR is November 2. He's doing well and doesn't seem to be struggling in any area. His petty officer came in the hospital room when he was on the phone to me last night and told him he wasn't missing too much. He said they have a couple inspections (the weapon hand off and something with their uniforms--forgive me I don't know the correct terminology). It seems like missing the inspections would be a big deal, but I don't know. Thank you again for the information, I appreciate it.

I hope it all works well for him and for you.  I also look forward to seeing you in the MA groups.

See http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=433 to give you an idea of what the PO was talking about.  It sounds like he is in week 3.

I will click the link you posted, thank you so much.
