I was just wandering if anyone knows if there are agencies or people out there who specifically offer to help foster pets while sailors are deployed?  My son will be heading out in July for a month and has two large dogs who will need to be cared for.  He would prefer that they would be able to stay together. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

EllenL - first off, I would like to invite you to join our Beyond BC group on this site - Beyond BC - Navy For Moms (ning.com)

Secondly, are you a part of your son's Ombudsman group? I don't know if your son's vessel has a private ombudsman FB page or not, but generally you can post questions there about your specific command and what options are available there.

My sailor and his wife are both stationed in Norfolk, I don't know where yours is at, but they have used various options when gone for taking care of their animals. They have had a fellow sailor that they trusted who came to check on their animals while away. They have had a trusted neighbor look after their animals, and they have also had an actual "animal sitter" come and take care of their animal.

I believe the animal sitter was the spouse of a sailor who did this as her business and she would take pictures and send updates of the animals. Theirs were not dogs which require more attention and care than their pets did, so I don't know. There might be a sailor family who would take care of them.

The other option is that he brings them home to Momma. - LOL! (This is why my children don't have big dogs, they know I won't keep them.) He might also check with the local pound or pet adoption placement facility in his area and see if anyone does take animals on a fostering basis.

Hi Chipmunk, My son is also stationed in Norfolk.  I am not apart of his ombudsman group.  Can you tell me how I would go about joining that? That would be awesome if they had a FB page to post information to. My son is not on a ship he is in aircrew.  So it might be different, I'm not sure.  I don't feel like I've seen much about that rate usually the information I see is more geared to sailors on ships.

I appreciate your response to my question and your help with trying to give us some suggestions. Have a great day!

Hi EllenL - I will send you a friend request so that I can share some information with you easier.

Be sure to check with Dogs on Deployment.  Here's the link to the group:

Dogs on Deployment

In addition to Dogs on Deployment, there is a group called PACT  https://pactforanimals.org/military-foster-program/

I haven't used them, but saw the listing.  A friend of mine fostered for Dogs on Deployment.  Someday I will also be able to do so.
