After A school, they are transferred, called Permanent Change of Station (PCS).  Some go to C school, some to their first command, usually a ship, but not always.  Some will have to wait for orders, others depart immediately.  They usually get ten days/two weeks of leave after A school.

Deployment is when their ship goes to sea, or their unit/squadron is sent overseas for a while.  How soon or how often they deploy/go to sea is unknown until they get their orders and report in to their new duty station after they finish their training. (I know that is nit picky, but it makes things clearer later when you know the terms).

Picking orders used to be normal, some still get to do that, but not always.  They don't pick from everything in the Navy, they pick from a pool of orders pulled for their class.  Sometimes the orders line up with their dream sheets, sometimes not.  If there is a set of hot orders which must be filled right away, those get assigned without a choice on the part of the sailor.  Needs of the Navy.

Thanks for all the info. This is all so new to me. I barely know anything about the military in general let alon the Navy! I just have to ask him tons of questions when we get the chance to talk again and of course Im sure I can get lots of great info from the more experienced women on this site! Thank you very much :)

My boyfriend tried keeping me updated as much as he could before he left! After they are finished with A school it depends on how they are ranked in their class. Usually the higher up you are, you get to pick where you will be stationed at or at least have the chance to pick, and as they go down the list you get assigned where you will go. I don't know if you leave right away once you get stationed somewhere, but I've read on this site that sometimes they get two weeks at home before going to where they will be stationed at. It all is subject to change, but that's what I know so far!

Thanks. I have so much to learn! He told me about a lot of things before he left, but of course I still have a ton more questions. I appreciate you sharing what you do know though :)

Yeah of course!! I have learned so much from this site along with connecting with people who have boyfriends in my SR's division. Feel free to ask whatever you want!! My boyfriend also got a 30 minute call home on Wednesday which was the same day I got his first letters! He said in a letter that he wrote on 7/22 that if he got a 50/50 on this test he had the next day, he would get a call home. I think it also counted as a midpoint call since it was week 2 day 5, and that's usually when some SR's get to make a call home. It is not guarantied though, phone calls home are usually rewards for a division doing well or in this case, him doing really well on his first test. They say "no news, is good news" so try not to get your hopes up on a phone call home. I completely was not expecting one, thinking he would call his mom first even though he mentioned in a letter that he would call me. It was still a nice surprise to see the 847 area code pop up and hear his voice!

Awww that's very sweet. I'm glad that you've gotten to talk to him! I cant wait to hear my boyfirend's voice again and get his letters. Will you be traveling with his family to see him graduate? And if so, how soon do you have to make the arrangements like flights, hotels, etc? I don't travel very much and have actually never even been on a plane haha :)

It was so nice being able to talk to him after him being gone for 3 and a half weeks, I've missed him so much! Yes I will be flying to IL with his mom and sister. The last time I flew on a plane was when I was about 5 or 6 years old and I don't really remember much of the flight, so I am really excited to fly on a plane!! His mom was on vacation when we received his form letter, but as soon as she was back in town which was about a week later, we made flight, hotel, and rental car reservations. Everything can be subject to change though such as his PIR which is graduation. Usually after you receive his form letter and you know that his PIR date is set, you should look at plane tickets and booking hotel rooms. They say you should book a flight that can be changed at the last minute, but it was really expensive. It is better to book flights sooner because prices just go up as you get closer to PIR, and hotels fill up that are close to the base.

Yeah, I suppose I will have to talk things over with his dad once we find out his PIR date. From what he told me before he left, his dad and I may be the only ones who will be able to attend. His mom and sister will most likely miss it  and Im not sure about his older brothers who dont live at home anymore :/

At least the two of you will be going to see him though! That sucks that his mom and sister will have to miss it, but at least his graduation is closer to Christmas!! I'm sure he is looking forward to seeing you, just as much as you are! I've stayed in close contact with my SR's family, they have been so helpful to me since he has been gone! It really is nice to spend time with them!

Yeah, I"ve been in contact with my boyfriend's family too. They only live about 5 mins away. His family has been really sweet to me also. He said they usually never like his girlfriends really but that everyone in his family thinks we're good together. His sis even said she hopes we get married! :) I know he and I are both young but I'd love nothing more than to be his wife!

My boyfriend has mentioned in every single one of his letters to me about spending the rest of our lives together! How long have you and your SR been together? My SR and I graduated high school this past June and have been dating for over two years now, pretty close to two and a half years. I got more letters today!! SO happy!!

Awww Im so happy for you. And a little jealous lol, j/k :) I cant wait to start getting letters though. But my SR and I have been together for nearly a year now. We met at school just this past September. We both went to school at home, his school right across the street from mine :) I was starting my freshman year of college and he was starting his sophmore year. Things just took off so fast! But we discussed marriage a lot even before he left. I just knew right away he was the man I wanted to be with forever
