I am trying to find some information on how NEX cards work while recruits are at RTC. I have seen varying accounts across the internet, and need something concrete. Thus far, attempts to get the information from both my daughters recruiter, and via the RTC Facebook page have been unsuccessful. During a recent phone call home from my daughter, she told me that she was told she was unable to make any more purchases, and would have to cover the costs herself. She did not take any money with her, and although she opened a new bank account with Navy Federal before leaving, she did not receive her debit card in time to take it with her before leaving. As well, I can not activate it for her, either via the phone or internet, to be able to do so and mail it to her, nor can she do it herself without access to a phone or internet, so I'm not sure how she is expected to cover the costs. I was under the impression that NEX cards would track their expenditures and then whatever they spent would come out of their pay before being deposited to their account. I guess this is NOT the case. Do I need to purchase a NEX gift card online and have it mailed to her?? I found the link to the website to do so, but I wasn't real sure about inputting the ship and div info into the shipping address form. Also, she has been there since Aug 13th, and her PIR is Oct 9th. If I send a gift card, I really don't know what amount would be sufficient as I have no idea how much they are required to purchase themselves. Any help, would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

She was given a NEX card to cover her expenses at the RTC and most recruits actually have money left on the NEX card at the end of BC (some are even able to pay for their photo package from that), so it is strange that she has spent more than was on the card. The recruits no longer have the ability to have charges at the MEX taken out of their pay (other than Uniforms, but she will be reimbursed for uniforms with her Uniform Allowance--see When Will the Recruits be Paid? and Information for Spouses).

If you really do believe that she needs additional money (I really do not understand how she could), then you can go to https://shop.aafes.com/scs/default.aspx to get a NEX gift card and yes, you can enter your recruit's address for the "Ship to" address, but you have to enter your phone number since you can't enter a phone number for your recruit. I would ask her how she has managed to spend more money than most do at the RTC if I were you. She shouldn't need much if you do send her the NEX card since all of her living expenses are covered and she should have purchased her hygiene items already. If it was the photo package that she doesn't have money for, then you can help with that on the day of PIR (see Division T-Shirts, Graduation Photos, The Keel, and DVD of PIR).

Thanks for the info. I have no idea how this has become an issue either. I would think they would be somewhat limited on how much they can buy and have in the way of personal items. I will ask her about her expenditures in my next letter, unfortunately the sending of one and receiving of an answer is a lengthy process, so in the meantime, I suppose I will opt to try to purchase the gift card and hope that works.

You are very welcome. Yes, I realize that it can be more than a week before you will receive a reply from her to a letter mailed Monday.

A side not regarding the shop aafes website, apparently you are only allowed to make purchases here if you are current or retired military. I was not eligible, and even though the purchase I made went through to my card, it apparently has since been noted that I am not eligible, and will drop off my account over the weekend. Just thought this might be useful info for someone in the future

Sorry, I have purchased gift cards through the site, but it's been a while.
