Hoping to create a discussion thread for parents of recruits that left in January of 2015.  My daughter left this past Monday, so she has been at GL for 1 whole day now.  Yesterday was an emotional roller coaster.  Today I am full of pride and realizing the true meaning of "No news is good news".  I can not wait to hear from her, but I also know how determined she is to get through basic.  I know it is not easy and our children are probably stressed beyond any limit they have ever experienced.  I would love to connect with other parents of children that have left this month and share this experience with them.  Plus, knowing I am not alone is comforting.  Hope to hear from you all soon!

Hi LauraCam,

My daughter arrived at GL Monday night.  I am in the same boat with you that she is my only child.  I can stop wondering what she is doing and how she is doing.

This is a great page for us to all help each other through.  I look forward to spending the fext few weeks together and hopefully meet at the PIR.  Our kids shouldn't be the only ones to make new friends!

To Worriedmom

We ended up buying socks at the airport cause that was the one thing she forgot to do. She had 2 layers everywhere except her ankles, she accidentally took ankle socks (out of habit) rather than the long socks we bought before.

Once I get a call or letter, I think I will exhale ;) one milestone at a time....first up "the box"

I will let you all know that although it is only day 2 (for me) I have already written 3 letters and started a journal.  The journal is to write down my emotions or stuff that I don't want to share with her (yet) because I do not want her to be worried about me and how I am getting along with her being gone.  I'll pass the journal on to her after she gets settled in A School or new duty station.  For now, I'm trying to send her encouraging letters w/ quotes, jokes, funny stories of the day, or scriptures.

My son left on January 6th. It was torture for me...I had to be strong for him but leaving him and driving off from the recruiter's was tear filled. Talking with him on the phone as he went to MEPS for final tests and swearing in grew more stressful as the time neared for him to board the plane for Chicago. He made his last call....besides the I'm here call....when they landed and ate...as many of the others were doing. That was the worst...to hear him so emotional and scared. I felt like I had abandoned him and could not help him. I know from reading I am not alone...and that is solace. There is comfort knowing that many of you out there are feeling just as I am. Waiting to hear his first call....hoping he will sound more confident and happy...as happy as he can be in BC. Thanks to everyone for sharing your stories.

Nicole,  So your son left a little over a week ago.  How are your emotions now?  Will I still be up and down next week?  :D

I'm hoping that you will receive your first call very soon and you can share that with us?

This morning (day 3) I am excited about giving her a HUGE hug at PIR!!!  The life the military offers is unique and I'm so proud of all of our children!

I just watched this video and I honestly just teared up, thinking about how PROUD our children will be at their 'cap' ceremony!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jibm7kyIGcM

I hope you all enjoy this video!

GOT THE BOX!!!  Anyone else???

Extremely!  It was marked the 13th, but missing FedEx we just caught it today.  I wasn't expecting it until the weekend.  I was so excited to get to the first milestone and then when I saw her writing I got tears again.  What a ride...

When I got home there was a FedEx thing on the door, so I have to sign it and leave it on the door for them to leave the box. When my 20 year old went last month they left the box with no signature needed, not sure why they needed one this time. But I had planned on leaving a note on the door tomorrow, didn't expect it to come in today. lol

Same here, wasn't expecting it until tomorrow at the earliest. Great news! Congratulations ;)

boyscoutmom, "the box" should have required a signature last month as well. Perhaps the Christmas deliveries affected that in your area. I had a shipment from a company last month that I have purchased from before and last time I had to sign for the package, but a box was left without a signature in December. The driver didn't even wait long at the door; he rang the bell, left the package on the step, and left.
