June marks the official beginning of summer so let’s have a

YELLOW AND BLUE BARBECUE

Our June adoption is for a “crazy crew” of ABHs aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington CVN73.

The ABHs (Aviation Boatswain’s Mate – Handling) are the yellow shirts and blue shirts on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

They launch and recover aircraft and work extremely long hours covering day and night flights.  Things get pretty hot working around “the birds” and this crew needs a bit of summertime fun to lift their spirits!  Bulk boxes filled with the ingredients for a fun summer picnic or barbecue would be great for this group!

Based in Yokosuka, Japan, they are currently on patrol.  The ABH crew consisting of 165 males and 22 females.

They are requesting:

Food

beef jerkey, slim jims

energy/protein bars, breakfast bars, Pop Tarts, mini boxes of cereal, granola bars

dried fruit, canned fruit (easy open tops)

canned soup, cup of soup, tuna (in pouch or pop top can)

crackers, rice krispy treats, sunflower seeds, chips, pretzels, bean dip, cheese dip

cookies (any kind would be great) Jolly Ranchers, Smarties, Sweet Tarts, hard candy, gum

seasoning salt, hot sauce

Gatorade type mix for water bottles as well as the water bottles with straps

First Aid / Personal Care

aloe vera burn gel, lip balm, moisturizing/cleansing eye drops, saline nasal spray, throat drops

vaseline blister care, flexible & cloth bandages, surgical masks, bug repellent, pocket tissues

no-water aspirins, vitamins, cotton swabs, nail clippers, eye glass wipes, Avon Skin So Soft

"hoo-ahh" brand unscented pre-moistened field towels, waterless antibacterial soap, sunscreen

strong flashlight & batteries, air freshener, tablet laundry detergent, perfume, cologne

brushes, combs, foot powder, disposable razors, non aerosol shaving cream, deodorant

Fashion

cooling neck bands, good quality sunglasses, bandanas, black boot socks, padded insoles

Fun

deck of cards, DVDs, Nerf balls, and a big YES to pillowcases.

I know that their list is long but these sailors really take a beating up there on the flight deck so let's send them some fun with a

YELLOW AND BLUE BARBECUE

Please mail packages between June 23rd and June 26th.  Thank you!

the colors they are talking about are there long sleeve shirts and vests they wear on the flight deck , each color donates a job they do. for instance the red is ordinance (bombs) the purple are for fuel (they fuel the planes) ABF = Aviation Boatswains Fuel ( i believe ---hmmm on the boatswains part) and the each have a silly nickname too ---purple shirts are grapes

The whites are safety and the yellows are shooters I believe the greens are mechanics, blue are handlers (move the planes around)  Now I could have some of these wrong as its been awhile since I did this from memory but you get the idea.

When they are all on the flight deck --if you are looking at them from the above Crows nest it looks like a bunch a skittles have been spilled on the flight deck and that is why together as a group they are nicknamed *Skittles*

I think you are right Molly and the brown shirts are plane captains. I would think the neck coolers would need to be solid colors that are the same colors as the shirts, so in my opinion, yellow and blue ones and they need to be close to the same color. It sounds like the contact will share with the others on the flight deck so add some red, purple and green. My son is a helo AM and he wears green,

Ladies, I am new to this site (N4M) and new to this group. I've been overwhelmed at the information that is available and the many different ways to support our troops and each other! I would like to find out more info on becoming a part of this group and supporting our troops, especially since we don't even know when our daughter will leave for boot camp yet. (I'm itching to start sending love! lol just the caring/crafter in me!). What is the best way to find out all the ins and outs of this? Like how many items should be in a box, etc... Thanks Ladies! I am planning to enlist my future SR in helping and maybe one day she'll be on the receiving end!

@MamaLama, Sent you a message on your page. NOT TO WORRY, we will have you up to speed in no time!!!

Be sure to pick up a large flat rate box at the Post Office (regular large or the apo/fpo box) and grab a customs form for your box. Fill the box, use the address provided in another section of Molly's, fill out the customs form and take box to the post office. They should charge you the lower rate for the apo/fpo address and will make sure you've completed and signed your customs forms. happy shopping per the list above. It's addicting. Make sure you are "following" the group so you get the ship dates and helpful info. Welcome to "we ship love."

Laura, I will send at least 2 boxes of food items. I have quit my job because we get Addie for 6 weeks this summer and didn't know what all I could do but I have filled in at work and have some funds I didn't think I would have. If I can do more, I will let you know!

I have at least 2 boxes to send, one with toiletries (people have been sending them to me at work specifically for this adoption), plus I ordered 10 boxes of Avon SSS bug repellant (8 packets to a box). By the time I get the toiletries ziplocked into groups, that might take 2 boxes. Then if I can, I'll look for some BBQ stuff to send!

For the Yellow and Blue, I thank you!

We are going to get this adoption taken care of the hard way, one box at a time.

I am confident that we will get there, slowly but surely!

@Laura, I'm sending 4 boxes. Contents: beef jerky, smarties, sunflower seeds, gum, playing cards, coffee, foot powder, razors, black socks, and flavor sticks for water bottles. Also 1 box for a movie night (20 DVD's with popcorn and candy)
