If my 17-year-old could do it, it must be easy. Call this #

1-888-842-6328, listen for the prompts to open a new account and a real person answers...24-7. He did it all over the phone, he needs his ssn and they ask him a bunch of info. He asked to make it a joint account so they have to mail that info to me. But they gave him an account number and confirmation number all during his call. You can do it online but the application says you must be 18 so we called to avoid having it rejected. There was no problem. Good Luck.
thx we gotta get something going he only has 3 weeks left home
Hello Everyone, just wondering if anyone is leaving from MEPS in Knoxville TN?
Yes I guess it's just you and me kid. :.)  How is your husband doing?
He seems pretty upbeat at the moment. He went to see his dad and grandparents at a lake nearby for a couple of days so I am missing him already. Our party is this weekend so I know he is excited about that. I'm just afraid after that the reality will really start to kick in. We weren't going to use the Navy Federal but the more I got to thinking about it, I thought it would be easier to just start out that way then we can do a name switch when he gets married. ATMs down in Florida would probably eat up his debit card with our bank too. I think too much I guess..... :.)
I found POA forms online also and had them ready to sign, but then couldn't get a notary public to certify them which is why we ended up at the lawyers.  Good for you, Monkeymind, to have one as a friend!  :)  It took us longer than expected to get the appt when I called because I was putting it off until he was home from college.  Sam'sMom - When my son returned from college, it was in laundry only.  He was too busy doing his 'last...' (movie, gaming night, date, etc.) with his friends and cousins to be around home much.  He has a couple stacks of items in his room for me to send to A-school and packed an ALL BLACK backpack with his computer and a couple changes of clothes which we hope to pass off at the airport when he heads to FL after BC.  I put his cell phone and tennis shoes in them when they were returned with The Box.  The recruiter said the backpack had to have two straps and be all black.

This is the first I've heard of the all black backpack...fortunately we have one already but I've not seen that mentioned. My son will also be going to FL for A-school.

One problem I've encountered with the POA's, my son will turn 18 during bc, therefore he cannot sign them before he leaves...legally they will be unenforceable. Although my friend will look them over I will need to find a notary in Great Lakes and who knows how long I'll get to see him. I will have to find a way around this...may have to wait until we go see him in P'cola.

I haven't heard about the backpack either.  I'm also confused about what they can have with them at A school. Midwest Mom can you give them the backpack at the PIR or at the airport?

i was told u will have to mail them to him once they go to a school is what my son told me after i get back from his pir he said wait a day or so b4 i mail it to him
Monkeymind, I am a notary in the state of Florida.  If you are still looking for someone to notarize forms once you and your son is in Florida, send me a message.  :-)
Thank you...I will make a note of this; I just may be contacting you.
Lisarobin - From my reading, I think every A school is different so read the postings for the one your son is going to.  I think mine can take his computer and cell phone, but he will most likely have to keep them locked up until he earns the right to use them.  Once he's phased at BC, then he will be granted more and more privileges, especially during the evenings and weekends when he doesn't have watch.
