Yes I agree. I feel like he will be so overwhelmed that would be one thing less to worry about. I think he has finally agreed. Going to try to do it today before he changes his mind. :.)
Have him call the 1800#. We did it last Sunday and already received his debit cards. You can print out the joint ownership application from their site, have him sign it now. I see he leaves next Tuesday and with the holiday tomorrow you may not receive it from them. This way you have his signature. They set his online acct up for him too when he called. I know what you mean about changing his mind. My son said no, he didn't want to be different and then one day he said ok...I jumped on it.
Thank you for the info. I will call asap.
Sounds like you are getting things taken care of Lisarobin.  Just keep breathing.  Saying good-bye is tough and those first days aren't a picnic, but getting that first form letter with a PIR date and address is awesome because you know when the end of BC will be and when the start of better communication will begin.  Talk to him when he's around (mine seemed to disappear pretty regularly before he left).  Remind him that BC is about breaking them down as individuals and building them back up as a team.  Make sure they've all watched the video about BC.  Tell him you are proud of him and will be praying for him and that he will do great!  Get him in the mindset that he can overcome anything they tell him and he'll make a great sailor!  I couldn't stop the tears like I wanted to, but he knew I had complete faith in him when he left and that I was proud of him.  We get to see him in 40 days!  Yeah!!!
Wow 40 days! That is awesome. Have you been able to talk to him besides the 10 second I'm here? Also, I'm still confused about the letters we can send. I know the outside needs to be plain white but can the paper be colored? Can they have cards at all? I noticed some moms said they tore out sudoku sheets and sent them. Can you send another phone card if they them?
So far we've only had the 'I'm here' call and the form letter so I'm not worried about him running out of minutes.  His lines were pretty positive on the bottom of that and he was looking forward to the physical part of BC to start...had a lot of 'hurry up and wait' in the processing.  Today is only day 12, so they aren't supposed to get to call until around week 3.  Somehow he's one of the lucky ones though because BC will only be 7 weeks 3 days long IF he stays healthy, so now I don't know whether I should consider this week 2 or week 3 because a week has been cut off.  I've sent him several cards, but the only pictures were ones incorporated in my letters.  I scanned a couple articles and had them on the back of his letters.  I'm trying not to make anything bulky so that it has to be opened in front of his RDC.  I'm using white paper because they said they often read or reread them at night with the red light.
Thank you that is good info. I have been getting alot of good ideas from ya'll.  I'm so glad your son is moving along so quickly! Sounds like it is going well.  You should see me today..we went to see KungFu Panda II and I cried off and on through the movie! It was more about family and sacrifice so it hit a nerve. I heard a little girl crying too so maybe I wasn't too crazy. :.)
Aww--isn't it amazing what triggers us?  At church this week, the phrase:  "For God, not sparing his own son..." brought me to tears.  I really don't want my son to leave my state to have a career in the military.  I want all my children to land within a few hours drive so we can all say close, I can see my grandchildren regularly, etc.  But if God can allow his perfect son to die on a cross for miserable me, how can I be selfish and try to keep all my children out of harms way and close to my home?  Actually fully accepting the sacrifice will take more time, but I'm working on it.  I really just want to stay selfish and keep them all home.

Midwest Mom that was beautifully said! We want them with us but we want what is best for them too. My son just left taking his fiance back to the airport. She has been such a trooper coming back and forth trying to spend time with him and us before he leaves.

yes so beautifully said thx

lisarobin mine leaves 2 weeks today and i like u cried watching kungfu panda 2 lol i am so dreading it i want to grab hold and not let go butttttt i know he is tryin to become a man so pride is gonna have to be my strength.....the knot in my stomach is still there tho i dont think he is realizing how much he will truly be missed....... all i can say is GO NAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Everyone!  I just got home from my 18 yr olds PIR.  It was amazing!!!  We spent 2 1/2 days w/ him because he was staying in Great Lakes before he moves on to VA.  I am having a much easier time than my husband letting go of our SRs.  Only advise I can give is to cry when you need to, lean on this site and know that it DOES get easier.  The pride that you feel when you see them march into that hall is overwhelming.  The feeling of accomplishment as a parent when you visit with them after graduation and you realize that they have changed and grown up in that short amount of time is amazing.  Hang in there and enjoy every last moment with them while they are home with you.
