We've got you added to our calendar.  I don't know of anyone else going through a surgery at the same time their child is leaving, but extra stress around this time can be pretty common.  We will keep your family in our prayers.  Enjoy this last week with your DEP and come here and share/read when you want to be reminded that you are not alone!
AliceH51 - Welcome, my son is now leaving on the 7th also as is Lisarobin's son.  We will all be going through the same things at the same time.  Wouldn't it be funny if they wound up knowing each other.
Well I booked our room for the night before he gets sworn in (Monday). I'm in hyper mode thinking we are leaving something off. Going to work on packing with him tomorrow then go with him to meet his recruiter.
Yes as far as I know...I hope the recruiter doesn't tell us we are going to the Big ATL instead. My hotel can be cancelled up until Sunday though.
Hi, spent the day at the zoo with my son yesterday. He is leaving here on the 7th but reports on the 8th. What about your son?  And Lisarobin's son?
anybody know what hotel they stay at in richmond, va?
I don't know what motel my son is staying in. He said I wouldn't be able to stay in same one or shouldn't. So we just picked one near it and will just talk to him on cell then see him next morning.
we stayed in the same one with my other daughter (she actually stayed in the room with us) but i can't remember which one it was

My son's recruiter was at his commencement last night (the only military member by the way which says a lot about the Navy). Anyway I asked him some questions...my son leaves on Wed. the 15th and here is what his departure looks like: on Tuesday we can take him to the hotel by 6pm...they feed him and I'm guessing he can study. They transport him to MEPS on Wednesday where swearing-in is around 9am (may have to wait a little) but we can go there too. They take him by bus to the airport (across the street). We are welcome to go to the USO there and wait with him until his flight leaves (could be a long wait).

My son actually thanked me yesterday for all I do for him...this is huge. He's always respectful and gracious in his own way but for him to verbalize it meant a lot. He's officially a man!

Wow that was nice that he went! I guess we should have waited to talk to his recruiter before we booked a hotel but I don't think her really wanted us to stay at same place. I'm trying to give him space and not make him feel like I am babying him. Packing the room today...wish us luck. :.)
that is great my son doesnt want me to do anything except drop him off at the recruiters office and leave ...is so heart breaking but i guess he is ready for me to cut the strings...we did actually sit down and watch every single video on u tube about the navy yesterday... then he was like ok ive had enuff my son is loving ( to a point) and respectful but told me in nice way this is my journey and i need to go it on my own..... man holding back the tears as u look at your son but seeing him as he was as a little kid and knowing i have to let go is tearing me apart i know i have to do as he wishes but man i just wish he would understand what this is doing to me... sry about the pity party here but wow u know..... i think he might need the space sometimes i feel like i am smothering him but i just want to keep him mine forever u know?

My son has shown incredible growth & maturity as well, and my son's recruiter is great too! It has been a great experience so far. I just hope he isn't disapointed once he's in. I have a nephew in A school now and he has seen that after bootcamp alot of sailors return to their old bad habits...It's been a hard six months for me, holding my sister's hand while her son joined. Wow I can't believe its almost our turn now.
