Oops - Items I screwed up on included sending candy with him to take to A-school. Haven't been on the A-school sites for a time and forgot they aren't allowed to have any food so the first thing he did was to throw all his treats away. :( Pictures--Didn't take enough organized family ones...got lots of ones with him though.  Morning of PIR, I ended up in the far left lane on Buckley and couldn't cut into the line waiting for the gate to open--that being said, it actually worked out fine because we drove the loop, did a U turn at the top of the loop and ended up in a line from the east which was MUCH shorter.  Not something I'd probably recommend though.  Eating out--he decided on pizza for supper so we headed to Guidino's...yeah, it had an hour wait and we didn't have an hour to spare. He spotted a Wendy's and decided a frosty sounded good so his big meal was at Wendy's...earlier in the day part of our crew picked up subs after PIR for lunch at his request.  Try to stay relaxed with them because things don't go as planned!

im listening!!!! thanks for the posts MidwestMom....your words and advice are priceless.

thank you for all you do and have done for all of us June BC'rs.

glad i popped on for a few :)

congrats on your New Sailor!!!!!!!!

i agree you sound like it was awesome and thx so much for sharing i am so looking forward to my sons pir.....is it as great as it sounded? is the nex off base bigger than the one on it? omg i am full of questions huh lol well to repeat again thx for all you have done and continue to do you are so so awesome

(Ship 11 Div 273) My son, Ryan, left for BC on June 28th. Received his "Box" on Tue July 5th and finally received his letter on Sat July 9. Between my husband and I we had already written a dozen letters which we put in two envelopes, along with pictures and a calling card, and rushed them to the post office. I had my first big breakdown last night at 1pm and couldn't stop crying. It was an "Ugly Cry" as Oprah would call it.  I wrote a letter as I cried of how I was feeling, but also knew at the same time I can never send it to him.  It was the strangest thing. I pictured him in my mind with my eyes closed and opened. I couldn't get his image out of my mind and i just broke down. After about an hour of crying and my husband trying to comfort me i was able to sniffle my way to sleep. I don't ever want him to think I'm having a hard time when look what he is going through. I am just so afraid that I will miss his call when it comes. I just keep it in my mind to ENCOURAGE, ENCOURAGE ENCOURAGE!

Patttea--I cry every time I read postings like yours because they are too close to home.  I am sooo proud of my son, but that doesn't mean I'm not his momma and I don't feel scared and sad thinking he may decide to make this his career and won't be returning home eventually.  My hubby did a 4 yr stint and we happily returned to Iowa, but he has an older brother who went in at 17 and never came home because he retired in TX.  I know the military needs great men and women...  It is tough!  What mom wants their baby to fly that far away even if they look awesome soaring with eagles?  Take your fears to God.  He sees your son and knows what is in his heart and what is in his momma's heart.  If anyone loves them more than their moms, it is God.  Turn him over to God and charge Him with guiding your son to live the life He has meant for him.  Sometimes I have to turn my son over multiple times a week, because I'm not sure God's plan and My plan are the same, lol, and I'd really like my kids to live My plan (which is close to their mom)!  :)
Hello everyone!  Yes, PIR is wonderful but you still get a bit antsy waiting for them to call liberty!  The bands are great, the marching is awesome, but they are standing in the way of getting to hug your Sailor so I'm glad it isn't any longer than 1 1/2 hrs. There is a NEX gas station just a short walk from Navy Lodge, but you need to get something from the front desk or else they are only supposed to allow military personnel to purchase items.  The NEX on base is big and they don't ask for a military ID since we've already been allowed on base.  There were other NEX/commissaries in GL, but again I think they'd require a military ID, so try to use the one on base either after PIR (terribly busy) or if your Sailor wants to go back to base early like ours did, it wasn't too busy at 6 p.m.  Just don't wait to pick up your pictures late.
will the sr`s get the pics or do we have to go get them/

Several in my son's div had their pictures handed to them prior to PIR, but not all.  I don't know why...maybe not all paid in advance, maybe some were out and about when they were handing them out??  Anyway, I stood in line because we were waiting for him anyway and he already had them.  They are pretty awesome.  They were taken before he'd earned his second ribbon and he didn't have any patches on his sleeve yet.  All will have at least one red/yellow ribbon for joining during a time of war.  Mine also had a sharpshooter ribbon he earned later, but I'm not sure what other ones can be earned.  Pretty neat.

A-school is awesome.  He can't use his computer or wear civvies until next week when he hits Phase 2, but he can occasionally call and text, and was also allowed to keep his ipod in Phase 1. Never thought I would be a fan of texting, but it is awesome!  He shares a room/bathroom with only 1 other Sailor, but may end up with a third.  Said they have 2 walk in closets and it reminds him of a frat house. Food is better too (but he initially thought BC food was good until half way through!) Remind your SRs that life will get better! :)

thx again so much for all your advice .....it is so greatly appreciated in A sxhooll they get to keep their cells tho right? sry about so many questions
bobbie, yes they get to keep their cell phones in A school.  that's one of the items my daughter wanted when we went to PIR.  we took her a suitcase with civies, cell phone, digital camera and even a boom box and she got to take it all with her.  however, it wll be a few weeks before they can leave the base and wear the civies.
great she stayed in great lakes? that means my son should be able to take his stuff at least by that sunday with him?
Yea Midwest Mom! I'm so happy for you! Sounds like it all went well. Did you pass his computer off to him at the airport? You have given alot of good info. Still on for the 5th! counting down. :.)
