If they are allowed to come home after BC how do they get home? I had understood we could not bring them home with us on Sunday but if they are released for 2 weeks?? And then, how do we get them to their A school location? Does Navy provide transportation or is the recruit responsible. Seems like a silly question doesn't it! But I don't have an answer so I'll post here to see what you all know.
Elizabeth, your cautious approach is a good one. Just won't know for sure until you hear from your Recruit/New Sailor, the Leave Chits are filled out and approved, and the orders have been cut and are in their hands. The Navy makes it hard on planner Moms! :P You have to learn to stay flexible AND be very patient! ugh. They could get two weeks, or less.

Betsy, I like your Recruiter, he seems on the ball and very helpful. Consider yourself very blessed. Believe me, not all of them are like yours. :( There are definately some good ones though, sounds like you got one from the cream of the crop! :)

Lori, no such thing as a silly question around here. The Navy pays to fly your Sailor to their A school (if not at GL) , they also pay for them to fly to their first duty station after they graduate. IF your Sailor chooses to change that flight and head for home at some point, then, they have to pay the difference between that and their original destination.

You want silly...when my son graduated from A school, he wanted to change his flight plans to another state as a friend was getting married in AK and he was in the wedding. Since his assigned duty station was in WA, the folks at GL could do nothing to change his orders or his flight! He ended up having to fly home. Arrived at midnight (mind you, we hadn't seen him in 4 months, since PIR) hugged us and went to bed. He slept for 6 hours, got up, ironed and packed his uniforms and seabag again and then went to report in to his Duty Station. He flew back out across te country that afternoon for the wedding and a long weekend and then came home on Leave!! The ways of the Navy will not always make sense to you! :)

Now, with a Dec 17th PIR, although I'm hoping they'll just be able to come home with you that weekend, it's entirely possible that all new Sailors will first have to report into their respective A schools first, then be released. Sometimes that can be tricky for those flying somewhere and then reporting in, You have to get settled in, find the right people in command to sign the orders and release them for holiday travel. Yes, sometimes they pull duty, or even chose to stay and take leave after A school instead. Then of course there is winter holiday travel and trying to find decent fares, sometimes at the last minute. UGH! I'll be praying it all goes smoothly and you'll all be able to see your new Sailors in time for Christmas! :-)
Betsy - My Adam is going to Groton - Subs Electronics. Lori
hay do you know any information on how were getting to illionois. are we taken the bus from meps to the airport or something.. ?
just wondering so i know how much money to bring.
Navygirl, they will shuttle you to the airport, then fly you to Chicago. You will want to go to the USO in the airport. (free food, nice people/volunteers and a great area for military to hang out while they wait!) The Recruits will all arrive in waves and they will begin to bus you in groups to GL, usually later in the evening. You don't need (and shouldn't carry) much cash, $25-$40 should do. My son bought a book at the airport, some snacks and one meal. We always advise new Recruits to have your cell phone with you, a pre paid AND activated calling card, some cash, your ID and a debit card. Especially important for our winter ship outs, as weather can be unpredictable and delay travel plans. :)
thank you :) that helps alot. just 29 days. gettin excited
Congrats to Adam!!!
Thank you!
Thats the same day Stephen is leaving! - Congrats on passing the PT - its not easy.. we went thru 2 recuiters. 1st his time was up on shore and was heading back to sea duty, 2nd was sent to Haiti after the earth quake, but he's back now, and of course the 3rd, whos always around. I have to say we have been very Lucky. My nephew who moved to Florida last year came back to NY and enlisted with them last monday. Over the summer the Navy sponsored a family picnic for the entire Long Island Dep group
it was great to meet, talk and spend time with the commander and the chiefs in that type of setting
Hi Susan, I didn't see you here. Yea, Pensacola. Kathy
I haven't said much for the last two days. I have been at a softball tournament with my youngest daughter. You guys have been busy :) Susan
Betsy - thank you; I'm getting a hotel room at MEPS so I'm certain to be there in time for swearing in. We have a 1.5 hour drive to MEPS so I don't want to risk missing it. I'm traveling on business the next few days - hopefully I will be able to check in with everyone in the evening. If not, have a good rest of your week everyone! Lori
