You guys, I totally agree and I feel like my situation is magnified as my hubby isn't Ian's dad, and I am not really even talking to him much about this at all. It's really different (seems to be anyway) if you are not the actual parent and it is magnified by the fact that he is male... He went through BC in the 70's, was eventually let go as he is legally blind, but it was after he completed BC LOL. So he does have some info, but basically says that Ian is in for a huge shock. Now doesn't that just make me feel better, even though I know it's true at several levels.

I think it's the unknown of how the kids are going to deal with it. I know that I would be OK...minus almost 40 years, but it's SO much harder to have your kid go off and deal with everything they are going to be exposed to. I just have to trust that we did a good job raising him and that it will all turn out in the end. December 17th can't come fast enough.
Nancy
My husband is also not Drew's dad, but he has raised him since he was 6 and is the only dad Drew knows. My husbands brother went in the Navy when my husband was a teen so he thinks he knows all this info. When I learn something new he says "Well when Scott went in..." ARGHHHHH Men :) I was patient at first but finally the other night I told him that that was 20 years ago and things have changed!!! Susan
Betsy,

I have been so upset with my husbands brother. He has basically told Drew that he is an idiot for joining. This coming from a a guy whose only reason to join was to get away from home. And I might add that he is a 40 year old Peter Pan, has never grown up. Anyway, sometimes family say things that shouldn't! Susan
To all you Mom's and family who have loved ones's leaving for BC next week, Fair Winds and Following Seas to all of you! I'm a mom in the group of recruits that left 10/4 to 10/8. We are just starting to get our first real letters from our recruits, the wait is awful but hang in there because the rewards are worth it when you get that first letter!!

Many parents don't know that they can do so, but if you can, do go to the airport with your Depper. Most airports will issue you a non-flight boarding pass so that you can get through security and wait at the gate with your recruit for their flight to leave. Our airport normally only allowed two per recruit, but one girl had her Mom, Dad, Fiance, and Brother so the airport made an exception and issued all of them passes. I was able to spend an extra 6-hours with my daughter and kind of became the adoptive Mom for all of the other recruits on the same flight that didn't have parents waiting there with them.

Yes, it was a long day, airport food is horrid, and airport parking expensive.....but the memories of that extra time and seeing my recruit "leavin on a jet plane" was priceless.

Again, good luck to all of you! I'm here if you need anything at all!!
Hi Sunny-THANKS so much for this valuable bit of information!! And thank you for thinking of us!! I will definitely plan on going to the airport with Ian then... His brother and I are going to his swearing in...not sure whether his step-dad wants to go. I was thinking it would be nice to have the three of us together before Ian leaves.

Idea for people with public transport...you can park outside of the airport and take subway, BART, METRO, etc. into the airport. usually easier and less expensive for parking...of course, you need to buy a ticket. This is how my neighbor gets to the airport. She loves it!!
Nancy
Sunny,

Thank you so much for your good wishes.

I'm so glad that you posted on here, because I wasn't planning on going to the airport. My son's recruiter said that it probably wasn't a good idea. I am now definetely going to go. There are only 2 boys going out from here, so I'm sure my son won't mind if I stick around.

How are you holding up so far? My ((hugs)) go out to you and your family. We will be in your shoes in a few short days, so thank you so much for coming on here to let us know how it is. Please express my gratitude to your daughter for her courage and service. I wish the best of luck to her.

Betsy
Your Welcome Betsy! And thank you for thinking of me :) !
Let's just say that my group of Mom's have started to settle in, and know that no news is good news. Now that most have started to receive real letters, it's like a drink of water when you've spent 3-days in the desert - it's enough to keep you going till the next letter or drink of water and knowing there's one in the future even if we don't know exactly when keeps us going.

I'll be thinking about all of you next week! HUGS to all of you!
Sunny, My son's recruiter said that we cannot go to the airport. I wonder why some can and some can't? Thanks for posting, I will ask again at MEPS :) Susan
Susan-I read somewhere that it is because they want the kids to start getting in the "Navy" mode... something like that. But if some parents can go, then it should be equitable.
Nancy
I think so too. Maybe I want him to be in the Momma mode for just a little longer, LOL. I am really debating about it because my 17 and 10 year old will be with me. Kaitlyn (17) is super close to her brother and I wonder if it will be better for her to say goodbye at MEPS and not drag it out. Ahhhh RAOC... Susan
Very true Nancy! My mentality was that the Navy was going to get her soon enough, so I was taking every moment I could till then. My husband thought it was overkill, but Iooking back I'm very happy that I went.

My daughters recruiter actually told us about being able to go to the airport, but also STRONGLY suggested that we call the airport to make sure that was still their policy. Not all recruiters are created equal, but my daughters was awesome.
Susan (Drew's Mom) - don't take your reruiters word for it, some think they know everything but that's not necessarily true. If you would like to, it's worth a phone call to the airport as they make the rules for what goes on inside the airport, not the recruiters. No, you won't be able to ride on the bus with your recruit to the airport, you'll have to drive there separately. Still worth a phone call if it's something you would like to do.
