Happy March!!

This month we’re bringing some springtime to Afghanistan.  We have a Unit of 86 (80 men, 6 women) on deployment to an area where conditions are as our contact describes:

Living conditions are decent (4 walls, a roof, and floor), but could always use a touch of home. We have standard US-style electricity.

Snack foods, movies, and reading material are big hits.  As for the pillowcases, they would be very well received - most of the guys are still using standard issue scratchy military pillowcases.

Food requests are along the line of pickup and go snacks. Candy, sunflower seeds, nuts, & protein bars.

Our female counterparts are good for the basics. They are huge on the creature comforts that make the workplace not smell like dirty boots and muck (Candles or non-battery/plug in scented sticks). And snacks ... I think the recurring theme is candy and snacks

The largest request would be: COFFEE, Coffee Cups, and Filters!!  Tea would be a great addition; there are a few of us who drink tea.  Not sure exactly what type of tea they drink during the day, but I know I heard whispers of wanting the "Sleep Time" tea for the evening.

The general consensus other than coffee is really staying comfortable and weathering the winter while we complete our tour. Any support that is sent our way would be greatly appreciated!

Kim at “We Stitch Love” is already working on making their sleep time more comfortable.

They do have access to a freezer so if it melts they can re-chill it back into some sort of shape.

Mom’s ... they’re missing home, but I think we can bring some home to them.  Let’s make it happen!! Our mailing will be March 19th – March 22nd

WOW, this is so great! I'll be sending an e-mail to our POC over the weekend to give him a head's up that mail is on the way!!

I'm the one who should be embarrassed ... I'm sorry I didn't know there was a news letter. Thank you for the blurb!  Every mention helps.

CruAn -  I sent out 3 boxes on Saturday.  5 pounds of coffee, 9 boxes of hot chocolate, snack bars and licorice.  Another box filled with coffee filters and cups.  Hope that helps!

I think this is the first mention of hot cocoa. They are going to be thrilled! Thank you.

Well, we're down to the final days of this adoption.  I've sent and received a note from our POC that packages are on the way.  He promised to let me know when they start to arrive.  To phrase it kindly, communication from this unit is spotty, so I can't say when we might hear something back. But I do have a direct quote to pass along ...

"please pass on to those you can that we truly and emphatically appreciate every thought, gift, and prayer that has been sent our direction!  We are doing our best to continue to help those who want it and to ensure that we all come home safely."

Well, my tears aside ... I'll let everyone know when I hear next.  Thank you all!

I forgot to post what I sent. Besides the case of cups I sent through smile.amazon.com I sent a box with sleepy time tea (my favorite because they really help me) Clif protein bars, granola bats and some drink mixes.
Thank you Kim, I hope to hear soon that packages have started to arrive.
I've sent a message to Daniel, the POC for this adoption asking if any packages have arrived but I haven't heard back as of yet. Seems that something should have crossed their path in the last 6 weeks ...

I also wonder if they received the apples from the Honeycrisp contest that I won.????

We always know that they cannot respond in a lot of situations, but we surely hope at least one Mom hears from them.  We worry about them oh so much!

Hmmmm... I'll write again tomorrow. That will make 2 weeks since my last e-mail. I hope the boxes aren't caught in that O'Hare backlog you mentioned. I don't know where in the states they ship from. Keeping my fingers crossed we hear something soon.

Finally, we have confirmation that our March adoption was a success!!  I just received an e-mail from our POC, evidently there were changes to their communication system making it next to impossible to get on-line.  Even better news ... they're home !!

To excerpt from Daniels' e-mail:

“Let me first assure you that everyone is okay and in good health!  Second, every package made it to us with no issues.

Thank you so much for everything you did for us while we were deployed and for all of support from you and Molly's participants.  It truly kept us running and ensured our spirits were up knowing that great people were back home like you supporting and thinking of us and taking time out of your busy schedules to get things done for us.  Our job is easy and well defined while deployed - just adding that "Support Troops" to your schedule is another burden that isn't necessary to a daily routine, but you and the rest of Molly's were absolutely incredible for doing so.  Thank you so very much from all of us that were deployed, huge hugs are sent from all of us!!

Very Sincerely and with Great Thanks,

Daniel Hart”
