My son just informed me that he will be training to be a riverine...I know nothing about this rating, can anyone tell me about it?

Thank you, Susan G
Susan, Riverines are a special trained group.they go through a lot of intensive training.Think I told you some of the stuff my son did in Mississippi. They work with the marines sometimes.they patrol rivers, get the marines in where they need to go, make sure it's safe for them to go in.sometimes they may have land duty if it's needed. they use smaller boats with big guns on them to patrol.Mostly stay on the rivers. But they are trained to do a variety of things in case they ever have to do certain things.Right now my son is in Little Creek,Virginia. The last week or so they have been learning to drive the Humvee's,and armored trucks.
Hi Patty, gosh, no wonder my son has been so quiet about what he is doing. He knows what a worrier I am. He just arrived in Mississippi last Monday, he is not sure how long he will be there. HE is supposed to be stationed in San Diego..but he says he may be in MIssissippi a couple of months. I sometimes get the feeling he doesn't know what is going on..
I have a question about the Riverines. My son is currently in GL after graduating 28, Feb 2010. He went in with an EOD contract and he told me today that he really feels that it is not for him and he wants to be a Riverine. What rate would he need to request in order to have the best chance at a slot on a Riveron squad?
My son has recently told me that the Navy is making Riverine an actual rate, not just a volunteer group made up of many different rates. Not sure of the actual time frame for that becoming a reality. He should definitely ask if that's the case.

Can anyone tell me what the workouts are like for the Riverine's at Gulfport? Is it the same as EOD/Dive Prep or for SWCC?
Did your son go riverines? And did you ever get an answer to this? Haha, im desperate for any information I can get. My boyfriend is leaving for Riverines training in January, and I feel like we're going in blind!
Question. What would be the difference between SWCC and riverine? One might be SWCC drives SEAL's and Riverine's Marines? Thanks. Also seems like alot of gunnersmate's transision to Riverines. Is that the best route to go? Can an undes seaman have a chance or does one need a rate first? Thanks
My son has orders for rivron 3, reporting to Gulfport the end of October. Any other rivron 3 members out there?
My boyfriend just got his orders. He's rivron 3 leaving in January. How's your son? Do you get to talk to him much?
My son has also informed me that he wants to be a Riverine.  I looked on line and what I saw worries me.  I will be supportive of whatever he wants to do  but, this is alittle scary to me.
Hi all Riverine Mom's and wife's and GF's!  Just catching up and hoping all of your sailors are doing well.  My son is now traning in Little Creek, VA and LOVING being a Riverine.  He is home almost every night with his wife and is off on weekends so it does make the transition to married life easier.  The two months he spent in NC at Camp LeJuene (sp?) still had him home on weekends and he loved every minute of it.  I am nervous about deployment of course but my prayers that he train well and grow stonger help me as much as him I suppose.  If any of your sailor's are going the Riverine route I would love to share our experience as parents of a Riverine so far with you but will have to do it offline for security reasons so send me a friend request.  Have a great day!!
