My son leaves January 4th for boot camp. Anyone else out there leaving then?

My son leaves for boot camp on January 4th, 2011, which is just a week away.  Anyone else out there have a son/daughter leaving this day?  He will be leaving out of Houston and I know it's gonna be so cold in Great Lakes.  He thinks he is ready, but I think he is in store for a surprise and it's not gonna be a hot one!  lol   I'm excited for him, but so nervous!

Our son, Nick, is leaving on Tuesday as well. He is anxious but was linked with another recruit from our city just last week. I think having another young man leaving from Iowa will be reassuring to him.  He is anxious but looking for ward to it as well. He has been to Great Lakes about 5 years ago with the Eagle Scouts of his Boy Scout troop. He was impressed but very overwhelmed at the time. At that time he had not decided on the Navy. There is a cool informative video about what boot camp looks like, where they sleep, eat, train, etc. I just watched it and will have my Nick watch it when he gets home from working out.

I am sure you had some mixed feelings as our family did this holiday season. If you'd like to chat more, let me know.

My son leaves next week also. He is so excited. He is ready. We have had him to watch the bootcamp videos and I had him read a couple of things on N4M's site about BC. I have not cried this week but we are packing up clothes and getting things in order here at home. It is so nice to talk to other mothers whose children are leaving too. Please lets keep in touch.

Glad to hear from others too. Nick is getting a bit anxious. He tells everyone that he is more than ready but I am not so sure. I am wondering about one of your comments. You state you are packing up clothes. I am assuming (yes I know what that does) that you are packing clothes away since the guys don't take anything. True?? Are you sending a phone card? We are told it is essential and I was wondering how many minutes you might be sending?  Crying is not an option for me right now. My husband is having a really tough time with this and I am trying to be strong.Since our son went to one year of college and majored in socialization I am kinda set for him to be out of the house. The hard part will be not seeing or hearing from him for the 4-5 weeks or whatever the time is.

Keep in touch!!

Oh wow....it's good to hear from others on here.  My son just told me he leaves at 2pm on the 3rd and will spend the night in Houston at a hotel and the recruitor will take them to MEPS in the morning.  We have less than a week now.  This is his first trip to Illinois and I'm sure he is going to freak out over the cold since we live in Houston area and he has hardly ever been around snow.  lol  The only thing that worries me is him letting us know different information.  He is not one to share alot of info...you have to pry it out of him.  Nice to talk to you guys!  Stay in touch.

Our son is the same with information. The good part is that his recruiter told us this past Monday that if I don't hear from Nick within the first 4 weeks (right about 3-4 the first letter should come) I am to let him know. He says Nick will have h*** to pay at boot camp if his mom hasn't heard from him.

The cold isn't so bad right now. We live in Iowa and it is in the mid 30's and Great Lakes will be similar in temp but the wind off the Great Lake will make if feel a bit colder. Tell your son to make sure he uses hand lotion ALOT since they are out in the cold and he is not used to it. The recruiter told us that is an advantage (if there is one) of living here since our skin is accustomed to the cold this time of year.

Look forward to talking to you soon.

ya'll join this group   http://www.navyformoms.com/group/leavinforbootcampinjanuary   here you'll connect with other N4M's whose rcts leave in Jan
My son and one of my former students both ship on Tuesday.  I agree that you should join the January group. This is a great place with lots of "experts" and support. Keep in touch.
I'm going to buy a phone card as well, but not sure about how many minutes.  My son is not the type to hold long conversations on the phone nor write letters at all, so this is going to be tough for him.  And myself as well! lol  Everytime I try to talk to him about boot camp or tell him things I've read that he needs to be doing, he tells me it's all good and he's ready, blah, blah, blah.  We will see.  He has been lazy the last month or so just playing video games and goofing, so I hope he knows what he is doing.  I'm already getting pretty anxious about him leaving.  He's just turned 21 yrs old, but he still seems so young to me.  Anyway, I'm rambling on.......  Talk to you guys later.

Hi Nicksmom

I had to reply to you after reading about your sons attitude lol. My son is the same way. I ask him"Do you know what your instore for at bootcamp?"  He says yeah i know. I dont say much more so I wont make him worry. I guess he doesn't get worked up in advance like I always have. I would much rather look at things the way he does. But we are who we are. They will do fine in the Navy.

We are packing clothes up as in what he might want in "A" school, when he get clothes, good dress clothes and etc. When we go to PIR, I'm taking clothes he can wear in the hotel room. I know he will want something comfortable to wear.

I got him a 150 minute phone card. I couldn't find anything higher. I took a copy of the back and will reload minutes or send him a new one. I also am getting an address book ready with names, addresses and phone numbers together with stamps included. I understand it might be hard to make a decision so I want everything easy for him with the book. I have also been buying cards to send and I'm going to get the girls I work with to sign it. I am going to send pictures on paper of his dog so he can have that too. He will miss his dog!!

OM the days are narrowing down when my son leaves. We are down to less than 2 days. He still is so anxious to leave. I have stopped the crying, for now. I have done well this week. I dread the minute that we have to say our goodbyes! He knows I will cry and doesn't understand why. He just doesn't see why I'm sad when he is so happy.
Yep, we take our son to the recruitor's office tomorrow at 2pm.  Part of me is ready for him to leave cause I know he is ready to go and has waited a long time, but the other part of me is  sad that he is leaving.  I know he will be ok, but as a  mom we still worrry all the time.  I have a 23 yr.old daughter also who finished college this past May and is working and living on her own now.  She works late hours and it drives me nuts!  I worry constantly over her too, so it's just being a mother....loving your children!  Hope everyone has a great New Year and god bless our sailor's and families!!!
