My husband is getting ready for boot camp. We're both pretty clueless but I think I'm a little more lost than he is. We have a two year old so it's a little more stressful for me I think. What do we need to make sure is done before he leaves and how soon after he gets there will we find out all the details about graduation and things? What can he take when he leaves? Anything else I should know?

HI! welcome to the navy family! My daughter is in third week of boot camp now,so i can answer some of your questions. TAKE TO BOOTCAMP? Just the clothes on his back lol and these will be sent back a couple days later to you! I will tell you that having him take his cell phone will get you a faster first call the "im here and alive " 20sec call. After that call he will send it with everything else.He can keep any wallet size photos too. About a week after you get THE BOX as its known, you will get a letter from the Navy with all the graduation or PIR as its called info as well as an addres to write to him at.
Good luck to you both!
Thanks. This helps. Will he have to take any paperwork or anything with him? Do you know?

Wallet with ID, SSN card, stamps, list of phone numbers and addresses (small, plain wallet!)
$20 cash
a wallet picture
a pocket bible
a small religious medallion
an activated phone card she knows how to use
take a cell phone, it will come back, but she can call from the airport in case she doesn't get her "I'm here" call

Tell him to eat before he checks into the USO. Sleep on the plane, they keep them awake for 48 hours or so once they arrive.

We were ALL pretty clueless when we started this adventure. My son has been in for 2½ years and everything I learned about the Navy I learned from this website. Remember, there are no stupid questions, so ask away, someone will have the answer or will direct you to the place to get the answer.

As to what you should do before he leaves......he won't get a paycheck for about a month (the paperwork has to catch up with him) so make sure you have enough money to pay your bills etc. until his paycheck gets deposited in your checking account. The first couple of checks may be lower than expected as they take out money for the supplies he's issued when he gets there. As you're married, he'll be able to put in for BAH (Basic Housing Allowance) so that will be a big help. I believe he'll need a copy of your marriage license for that but ask his recruiter to be sure. My son took his cell phone with him so he was able to call home from everywhere on the way. His last call was as they were pulling into the RTC, but I understand that now they're letting them keep their phones until they've made that "Hi Mom/Honey I'm here" call, then the phones go into the box along with everything else, to be sent home. Within 2 weeks you'll get all the info about PIR (graduation) etc. but his recruiter should have his address within a couple of days. Start writing and write every day (they LIVE for mail call!). He won't write to you for about 3 weeks and you may get a phone call around that time too.

Good luck, and welcome to the "crew"!
