Hi, everyone.  My son leaves Thursday for bootcamp.  Should I send anything with him?  It doesn't make sense if everything just comes back to me in a box.  I am panicking thinking I'm not doing something I should be.  Crying all the time and proud at the same time!

He needs only the clothes on his back. Send an activated calling card,,,,make sure he knows how to use it. He needs his Drivers license, SS card, his bank info (unless he plans on opening a Navy Federal -which most do) and about 25 dollars.

He can take his cell phone (with charger) to use along the way and to make the last call with. Put phone #'s and addresses along with photos and a few bandaids in his wallett. HE CAN KEEP HIS WALLET. You may want to tuck a note for him to read over and over until he gets a real letter (he won't get a letter nor mail a letter till the 2nd Sunday he is there)

You can send some "wisps" for him to use to brush his teeth the night and morning before he leaves. That way his breath won't be funky.

Tell him to expect to be awake and no eating for abut 40 hours or so. Expect a lot of hurry up and wait, a lot of yelling, cussing...that is to be expected and is the Navy way.

The first 2-3 weeks will be the hardest on the both of you. Just hang in there...remind him that it is ONLY a few weeks and after boot camp it is much different.

Here are a couple of groups for you to join for support and info

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/leavinforbootcampinmay

http://www.navyformoms.com/group/bootcampmoms

You'll get his "kid in a box" in a week or so delivered by FedEx and followed by the form letter delivered by USPS. The form letter will have your grad date, address, ship/division#, grad info, password for gate pass(do not lose if you plan on going to PIR) and perhaps a shor note from him.

You can call the recruiter for the addy 72 hours after he leaves. BUT he will not get any mail nor will you receive any for about 3 weeks. Some get the first call before the first letter.

The recruiter addy is the addy for when they are in processing (pdays) and may be different from the one in the form letter. If I were you I'd call the recruiter then come on here and post the addy so we can tell you if it looks right and how to write it. Post it on Boot Camp Moms.

Most likely your PIR date will be July 13...may be a week later or earlier. So please make no travel plans till you receive the form letter. Once you know your PIR date.....join the PIR group. The link will be posted once it's created and it will be a lifeline of support and info.

Thanks for the info,it helps a lot.  This is all so new for us, we've never had anyone from our family in the military before.

TeesMom....neither did I so I have had to learn a lot...as will you. But, it will all be worth it when you see him graduate!

I'll second that! I feel so lucky to have found N4M's before my son left for bc. There is still a ton of things I don't know anything about, but know if I have a question it will be answered by someone "in the know".

If you wondering weather or not to attend PIR (graduation), the answer is YES, YES, YES! You will not regret one penny of the expense.

Welcome to the Navy TeesMom; hang on and enjoy the ride!  :-)

my boyfriend left today for bootcamp. I can't wait to see him and get my first letter. I hope it goes quick. :/

kiddo what is his grad date? There is a PIR group with lots of info and support.

kiddo, go to GROUPS: Listed By PIR Date and click on the date for your son's PIR and then join the group, to connect with others with loved ones training with him.  You may also want to join, or at least check out, Boot Camp Mom's, PIR Reference Information, and New Members Stop Here.  (Sites and group names within this reply are clickable links.)
