Are you from Great Lakes? Not really sure about the "whole" grad and go...and we have to travel far so it's hard to decide what to do for hotels and airline tickets - any advice would be appreciated.
We're actually from WA state! At first I had decided not to attend PIR, but the more I found out about it, the more I really wanted to go. So we were able to use airline miles to book our flight and will just stay two nights at the Residence Inn. We'll have all day Friday with our son and whatever time there is on Saturday before he flies out. In his last letter he sounded so excited that we were coming so that was confirmation enough. Plus we can take him his cell phone, laptop, etc. Our older son was in the Air National Guard and we didn't attend his BC graduation. I've always been a little sad that I didn't. But I sure understand what a hard decision it is. Hopefully it will become clear to you what you should do!
We attended our oldest son's PIR in May. It is very well worth going. I couldn't have been prouder watching the ceremony. We are actually driving from NY to see the PIR in January.

If you take him his cell phone, etc., you can't give it to him until he is out of his living quarters for bootcamp. My oldest son's A-school was at Great Lakes, and he couldn't get his cell phone until he had moved into his new living quarters.
I hate Grad-N-Go!!!!! I am still debating on what to do, I don't know if I can handle another hard goodbye, but I am still contemplating. There is a chance they will ship out hours after they graduate =/

My husband had to have cavities filled this past week. He said it wasn't as bad as he thought. Hopefully your son will heal quickly. I hated having mine out, but I healed fairly fast. My prayers are with him.

I guess there is a nasty cold/flu going around the div. My hubby got it and said it's terrible, and they spread it so easily, because they are all in such close quarters.
I know the goodbyes are gut wrenching, but I feel like even a few minutes with my son is better than not seeing him at all. I am definitely a cry baby too. :-) I know it is a hard decision to make, but you will make the right one for you. We are talking about driving out instead of flying since the amount of time we will be able to spend with him is up in the air.

My son who had his PIR in May said the colds just went around and around while he was in there. He is now at Camp Lejuene (fighting a cold), and I don't think he has ever had this many colds in his life.
Got a letter today written on Sunday. Found out that the next day, Monday the 29th, was week 2, Day 1 for this division. It was also the day of their first inspection. He said if everyone passed they might get phone calls. He didn't hold out much hope and obviously that never happened! First written test for him was Wed, the 31st. He said he passed his swim test (yeah!!!!), and that he is now a master at folding. ;o)
I received a letter as well yesterday. It sounds like there are three recruits who seem to talk when they aren't supposed to and cause the whole division to get in trouble. My son said he was ready for inspection and had shined his boots for the second time, and "they looked pretty good." Haha! I love the letters. They make the separation a bit easier.

I hope all you moms and girlfriends are doing well! Christmas time is going to be tough this time of year, but as I told my son, Christmas for me will be the day I see his smiling face.
We got our call! I was able to talk to my son for 30 minutes. It was great to hear his voice and know he is doing well. He's passed all his tests and has a few pretty good friends, one who will be going to A school with him. He said the best part is probably the meals and the hardest thing for him is to have to sit through repetitive instructions over and over because some SR's don't listen. I feel very relieved and reassured. Now it's just counting down the days til graduation!
We missed our call. He called home twice and my cell once, and we missed them all. He spoke with his girlfriend for about 10 minutes. I guess he was emotional. Tough for a mom to hear. I can't believe we missed it. I am so mad at myself for not having my cell phone on louder!
Awww - MaryC, I'm so sorry! That was my biggest fear, that I would miss his call. I think the rest of the family really thought I was pretty paranoid because I had my home phone forwarded to my cell and then I would panic if I accidentally left it in another room. I hope your son gets to call again. My son said it kind of depends on how well they do whether they will be allowed more calls.
Thanks, Karla. I have been glued to my phone. I turned the volume down for 5 minutes on my cell and missed it. Lesson learned. That won't happen again. I will have to hope they get another call soon. I am glad your recruit is doing well. I keep counting the days.
Got our first call lastnight..and it was great becasue my daughter was up from Virginia for her babyshower and she also got to talk to her brother...he had some dental work but just like his mother...he doesn't have any wisdom teeth!! Yeah!!..They were suppose to get an hour for phone calls but again there are a few "smart asses" holding them down..hopefully they'll figure it out...He called his father's cell phone and of course "dad" hogged most of the conversation...they are def..grad -n- go...he leaves for Pensicola right after graduation...but like most of you have posted...a small amount of time but I don't care it's better than no seeing him at all...hope all of you get a phone call soon! Haha..I sleep with my cell on my pillow! :)
