I got to hear from my son yesterday, missed the first call but grabbed that phone as fast as I could on the next one!
My son had his wisdom teeth out Tuesday and if he hadn't told me I wouldn't have known. He said it was no big deal.
Isn't just like life there are always the bad apples that spoil the whole bunch! Hopefully there will be some (healthy) peer pressure on those not following orders to shape up for the rest of the division.
My son is "grad-n-go" back to CA, he will only be 3 hours away, so I am debating going to PIR because of the weather for one and then the fast turn around... I just don't know what to do.
Pamela
Welcome Pamela! Glad you heard from your son! What A school is your son going to in CA? Mine is going to CA also - to Monterey, the DLI.
Hi Karla!
Yes in Monterey. He said 3 other guys were going to be there so I guess one of those is yours!
My son is going to California too. Did he say if they left right after graduation. What school is your son going to? Once they are in their A-school, they will get more freedom, and you would probably be able to see him since you are so close. We live in NY, and the weather can get pretty bad between here and Chicago. We are going to still attempt the trip.
We are also in NY - attempting flights and hotels in the next week or so..
I wonder how close we are? We live about 45 minutes north of Albany. We looked at flights, and they really weren't too bad. Because the grad-n-go is so up in the air, we decided to drive (at least for now). We are hoping our other son who is a corpsman in the Navy will be in Great Lakes at that time as well.
Hi Mary. I spoke to my son they leave on the Saturday after PIR; and he said that for the first six weeks of A-school the are not allowed to leave the base. Then for four weeks or so they have a curfew of 10pm. I too am worried about the weather, it is Chicago after all!
My son is going to San Diego. It will probably be around the same time as your son then. My older son was based out of Great Lakes for his A-school this summer. They had the opportunity to leave the base and go to Cubs games and went to the mall and such while he was in A-school (even in the beginning). They have to remain in uniform though That was when he actually went and got his much wanted cell phone. I wonder if it is different from base to base.
Mary...it is different per base...my son phased up in less than 2 weeks..and was wearing civilian clothes off base...he will be phase 3 next week and man is he excited...he has been at Pensacola since Nov. 10th...so it is different not only base to base, but rate to rate, and command to command...lol
Are any of your son's going to Pensicola?!...We are from "upstate" NY...30 miles from the Canadian Border...Between Syracuse and Watertown, N:Y...My son - in - law is army at Fort Drum NY.
hey Marsha....saw your post on the Pensacola site...you happened to catch a bunch of frustrated family members because there is a glitch in the computer system and Christmas plans are being held up...so families are paying big bucks for plane tickets and have not gotten confirmation that there loved ones can come home. the Pensacola group is very active, although very different from the PIR group. When you go back, take a look at the discussion forum and it wil give you loads of information about what to expect and what you need to know.

My son is there...he is an AE...he is on hold for classes. Pensacola is famous for that because they do Air Crew training for many branches of the military. My son's orders said he would class up in nine days of arrival....lol...yeah he has been there over a month and maybe by the middle of January...if we are lucky...so hurry up and wait is the name of the game there.

The barracks are great. My son has one roommate. He shares a bathroom with one other room with two guys in it. It is set up like a dorm suite. They have a microwave and fridge in their room. He bought internet service for like forty bucks a month. He calls home almost daily, so the contact is awesome. he was not grad and go so I had to fed ex him his stuff...and he has his lap top, zune, cell phone and even civilian clothes there now. He bought a tv and a ps3 from a guy who was going to the fleet for cheap...so it is possible to get things like that there.

Perhpas the most important thing to remember is that until they class up they don't have enforced PT...so he has to take responsibility and do that himself. They continue with persona and room inspections though.

I hope that helps you some!!
