Welcome to the Division Discussion for Divisions 103 and 104

These two divisions are brother divisions and will be training together from the beginning through BS21 their final test. Your SRs, soon to be SAILORS, are becoming friends, and some of them may be heading to A School together.

Get to know each other, your SRs are!

Please still use the Main Wall of the PIR Group to post questions, and concerns, we “veteran” moms don’t always get to into the discussion area as often as we would like.

Every single question that is asked is important Every single concern is genuine Every single member is important to us We don't want to accidentally overlook any of them or you.

Hang in there!!!

Shw92 that is such great news. Thanks for sharing
Anyone hear from Div 104 SR ?

Karina- I got  a letter Wednesday.  He didn't say much but that BS was coming up and that he was doing okay.

Not much help I know!

Hi 104 moms. I'm not sure why the letters aren't flowing. But I did get one yesterday and I am happy to share. Hope you'll do so too when yours come today. Remember that they are most likely doing the gas chamber today so pray for them ( this is based on deductive skills based on my sons letters and trying to follow their dates). This is 6-1 day for them! They are on the home stretch!
Here is what he had to say:

23FEB14
Hey Family!
Today is 5-Sunday. Tomorrow will be the 2nd day of week 5! it's so amazing that we have only --- days until battlestations! I'm so excited! We have had a lot of drama lately. yesterday, one of our fellow shipmates from our division was ASMO'd due to Hazing!

I got my results for marksmanship! I am (Drum roll please..) sharpshooter! So, I get another ribbon to wear! We have been practicing our P.I.s (personnel inspections) with our dress whites and blues and with our "peanut butters". My Favorite uniform is the "peanut butters". The trousers for the dress blues have 14 buttons and it takes FOREVER to button all those!
I love you guys and will see you soon!
Wonderful letter! Thanks so much for sharing! He sounds adorable!
Karin417...He's a great kid. I'm actually surprised that he sounds like he is doing so well....I was sure this would be more of a struggle for him. Hope it's not smoke and mirrors just for moms benefit! Lol! He turned 18 three weeks before he left! So to me his letters sound like he has matured so much! I'm glad we are down to the wire. This Sunday is their last Sunday to write us as a recruit! Yay! This weekends letter is the last letter we will receive as well...as we will be gone when their final letter comes to Chicago! Can't wait.

Blessed beyond Measures - My SR also turned 18 2 weeks before he left.  His letters are short and sweet.  Not nearly as much details but I do know he has 3 ribbons and a medal (no idea what for but I am assuming sharpshooting because he is fairly good with target practice).  His contract says E3 so but he did not mention anything about that.  He also did not say anything about anyone leaving or hazing.  I wonder how much he cleans up what is really happening so I don't worry.

What is ASMOD and peanut butters?

Amen and Amen blessed! :D
So the guy. Who was separated he was hazing someone in Div? Just wondering.... My son is older then yours and Carrie's 24 he's never been mean so don't think it's him. But it's somebody's kid... Hope our Div 104 and 103 handled gas chamber well really missed my letter this week :/ makes my imagination work overtime...
Carrie, the peanut butters are the tan shirts and slacks uniform. And (from my understanding)Asmo'd is to be sent back in bootcamp meaning they will not graduate with this division but will have an opportunity to "fix" something, get more training, etc...and graduate at a later date.
Mine too is an e3 ...no extra ribbon for that...but I know one ribbon is for enlisting at time of war...everyone gets that, then if he said he got a medal, I think it must be because he got expert at marksmanship...the next level up it has a ribbon and medal. As for the third, I'm not sure what that is...but wow! Exciting!

Actually just looked it up...
The only ribbons or medals that a recruit can get while in boot camp is the National Defense Service Medal & the Pistol Marksman.

The National Defense Service Medal is what sailors call a "geedunk" medal since you don't earn it, it is just given to you because you served honorably during a designated time period of which a "national emergency" had been declared. Everyone gets it.

The other one they you can earn while in boot camp is the Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon. There are 3 levels:

Marksman:

Sharpshooter:

Expert:

c. Summary Table – Navy Handgun Qualification Course

Yard = 3
Rounds = 12
Sequence =
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire two rounds, reload six rounds and fire two rounds/10 seconds
Draw and fire four rounds/8 seconds

Yard = 7
Rounds = 12
Sequence =
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire two rounds, reload six rounds and fire two rounds/10 seconds
Draw and fire four rounds/8 seconds

Yard = 15
Rounds = 24
Sequence =
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire two rounds/4 seconds
Draw and fire four rounds/8 seconds
Draw and fire four rounds, reload 12 rounds and fire four rounds/20 seconds
Draw and fire eight rounds/20 seconds.

Marksmanship awards, qualification, and record entries shall be based on the following:
Possible Score = 240
Expert = 228 - 240
Sharpshooter = 204 – 227
Marksman = 180 - 203
Minimum Qualifying Score = 180
Unqualified = Less than 180

This is straight out of the OPNAV Instruction 3591.1f

So the medal is the one they all get and the ribbon is for shooting? I thought his letter said 3 ribbons and a medal but I could be wrong (or he could have been wrong).  I do remember when my husband was active he got a ribbon with each medal, sometimes he was required to wear the ribbons and sometimes he had to wear the medals.

This is why I like this site...it gives me so much more info than my SR does.

Ribbons and medals are "the same", the two different types are worn for different functions. Your sailors will be wearing ribbons at PIR.

There are only two ribbons that your SR can get/earn while in BC. The first one they all get is the National Defense ribbon/medal for serving in a time of "National emergency" or conflict, sailors call it the "geedunk".

The other is a ribbon/medal for pistol marksmanship, which is earned. There are three levels to the marksman ribbon, marksman, sharpshooter, and expert.
