Son left st Louis for bootcamp on July 11,2013 having hard time dealing with it .

Hi my son left recently for bootcamp and I thought I would take it pretty good but thought wrong .
I know this site says navy moms and there is a site for navy dads but reading over comments on both sites it seems like I am having more of the same issues as the moms .I think the main reason I am so upset is that we did not talk much about him going in and not hearing anything but his arrival call is hard to handle .I will be fine one minute and next thing I know I am tearing up . How are some of the other moms and dads handling it. Thank you for any help

First off, there is a dad's board here. If you would like to join, we'd be glad to have you...

As to your question, first off I would say, write him often. Tell him how you feel. If there is a time in life you will have his attention, now would be it, but try to keep it light. Now is not the time to burden him with issues. Send him his favorite comics. I found some questionaires on here that made it easy to get general answers. Number the outside of the envelopes so he knows what order to read them, as sometimes they get mail, sometimes it stacks up.

Next, break it down into weeks, not days. Watch the videos on here that show what he's doing each week. It makes it much easier when you know what he's going through.

Hang in there 'til week 3 and know things should start getting a little easier for him.

Also, if you get letters from him sounding down, don't panic. It's pretty normal.

You may or may not get phone calls from him during Boot Camp. Seems to be the luck of the draw, so don't assume the worst if you don't. Remember, no news is good news.

Hang in there. This is the start of his long journey into adulthood. I can assure you, he'll have plenty to talk to you about at PIR.

Thanks again
Thank you for the information

Concernedad gave you the link for Dads on Moms.....com and you mentioned reading http://www.navydads.com; I would also invite you to join Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and begin checking out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members). Having information and connecting with others who are going through the same thing will help you.

You may also want to join DEP-Leavin for bootcamp in July, to connect with others with loved ones who left today and may have PIR together.

Once you know your SR’s PIR date and/or division number, watch in Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) and/or at http://www.navyformoms.com/forum/topics/groups-listed-by-pir-date and join the group for that once it has been created. There will be a lot of great information and support for you in those groups. Be sure to check out the Pages (found under the pictures of the Members) and Discussions within the groups. Arrival and What Happens at the RTC within Boot Camp Moms (and loved ones) will let you know what is happening, but you will also want to check out the other Pages in all of the groups.

:o)

Hi Thammer, My Son also left on July 11, 2013 and I did received his call on Friday July 12, at 1:08 pm.  I got the box on Tuesdsay and I have not recieved the Letter we are supposed to recieve with all the information on his graduation and address.  It has been so hard for me as well, he is my oldest of two boys, and the house feels very weird without him.  I am praying to get the letter or a call soon.  But my advice to you is just keep praying and God will give you the strenght to ressist not having your Son by your side, in Jesus Name.  God Bless You and take care.

My son left July 2nd. He is my youngest  so the house is empty and very quiet. The "I have arrived" call was very hard. I couldn't stop breaking into tears for the first 2 weeks. I imagined all the bad things that could happen. What really helped me was to read the site about what they do each week. I know it is sugar-coated,but it really did make it look like they would have some "fun " times. It did take a long time to get the first form letter (2 1/2 weeks). We just talked to him for the first time on Saturday and it made everything easier. He sounded great and made me realize that HE made this choice and this is where he WANTS to be. That made it all better for me. I still miss him but I am so proud!!!

Hi Kelly320, I'm glad you Son called you Sat., hope he continues to call you more often. the way you felt is the same way I feel now, I worry too much. I will check into the site you mentioned. And I really really thank you for your response. God Bless You.

The anxiety can't be avoided. My fiance is in Officer Development School right now and he is prior enlisted. I swear I'm not worried about him at all but I still feel a bunch of anxiety in the form of excitement. I'm not usually emotional but, in the middle of a yoga class the other day- the mind body connection.... let go... caught up with me and I started crying for no reason..... So, if I'm anxious then you must be 100X more and I'm thinking it's natural and unavoidable no matter how prepared you thought you were.
