My son just called and said he found out when stand down is.  Any suggestions from peeps in the know as far as purchasing tickets to fly home...airlines that offer military discounts...who is the best airline to fly with?  (Can't imagine flying over the holidays:/  Would love to hear from you!

Last question...What are the liberty hours?

On weekends, they are typically off by 0730 and they are due back by 2200 for Phase One (new students)

Liberty is their "normal" time off such as evenings and weekends, and federal holidays. Just as anyone would have with a regular job.
Leave is paid vacation days off and must be earned (2.5 days earned per month). If they haven't earned enough leave days, they may borrow forward a bit. To take leave, they must request it in writing.
My son pir is12/28 and i read the TSC GL ia standing down for Christmas and that sailors can take leave if this is where their doing A school will the sailors be informed that they can take leave what is the process to get leave after pir we live live in michigan and would like to be able to bring our son home and drive him back on 1/5/13

We will check our new sailors in and get them back out as quickly as possible.  You can certainly take your sailor home to Michigan. It normally takes us till about 4:00pm to get them checked in and turned around.

hi all, i have learned so much alreay, i did not know the difference between leave and liberty, i do now!
my son is in school now at gl, pact seaman, he graduated 11/21 and supposed to be in school for three weeks. that should end on 12/21, so does that mean that his 15 days leave does not start till jan 6th? also, he goes to his first job to norfolk, so what type of ticket does he book? a one way home to ga? because the navy pays for the trip to his first job right?

You need to talk to him about his school schedule and when he reports to his first duty station.  Every situation is different when it comes to them finishing their school.

As far as the type of ticket to book...again, if he is finishing school and reporting to his first duty station during the holiday stand down...he will have talked to people on the base about his travel.  While he is working on all this paper work,he will set up with SATO (the people on base who books his travel) to get a ticket home and than to his duty station (he pays the difference, as the goverment will only pay for him to go from Great Lakes to his duty station {Norfolk, VA})  Again what I just wrote is ONLY if he is finishing his school and reporting to his first duty station during the holiday stand down (Christmas leave time).  Also how much leave he gets before going to Norfolk is in his orders...which he has already.

DO NOT book a ticket, until AFTER you talk to your son and check with him what is going on.  There are too many variables...

Have your son talk to the barracks staff and his CPC (the person who helps with his paper work to get him to his first duty station) Monday

thank you so much i will, i already texted him and asked him to call me when he has some time to talk

Skipper Lintner, please let me know if I understand this correctly from what I have read.  My son is in A school, Phase 3.  Anti M says that Liberty is normal times off on evenings and weekends.  Does that mean that he can leave base after class, duty or other designated responsibilities he may have on Wednesday the 20th since stand down starts the 21st?  My son, from what he says, received some wrong information and booked his flight out of O'Hare at 6am.  He tells me from what he now understands is that he can not leave the base before 4am on the 21st.  I feel he is seriously going to be pushing it to make his flight. I am trying to shave time as much as possible.  I told him not to check a bag...maybe because he in uniform he may not have to stand in the security line as long...

He needs to speak to his Chief.  Stand down kicks off at 0400 on the 21st.  Ohare is set up to get sailors through security quickly but its a good 40 minutes to the airport from here. We have issues like this every year and we try to work through them.

I think he has.  It's unfortunate.  It is a good 40 minutes...and that's it if it is no inclement weather to drive in.  He has a taxi waiting at the gate for him at 4:15am. It will be an adventure for sure.  Well, if he doesn't check a bag, gets an app on his phone so he doesn't have to get his boarding pass there it will work out:)  Thanks for the info!  Now we know what we have to deal with,
