Does anyone know if they are allowed to receive care packages? If so what can we send him?

No.

Right on the RTC site list of What Not to Bring.
Is there a certain envelope we have to use?
I used a business sized (#10) envelope)
Thanks so much for the info. I just wanted to make sure of it. I have also included some pictures for my son. I just love this site. It really has helped me. I hate to sign off. There is always something new to learn. And the people are so sweet and helpful!!!
I keep reading about phone calls. We didn't send our son off with a calling card. It wasn't mentioned as something he would be allowed to have. Has anyone received a call from their recruit that also doesn't have a calling card?
Recruits are allowed about a 10 min phone call approximately 3-4 weeks into boot camp. No calling card required. I found a U tube link which will give you an idea of what your son/daughter will go through. Sort of puts your mind at ease (somewhat). My son graduated Aug 2010. We actually heard from him a few times during boot camp. His first call my husband dumped into voice mail thinking it was a teller marketer, then I missed his call by 1 second on my cell - we were distraught to say the least, but called a few days later. I guess the check and make sure all recruits made contact with family.

My son left for boot camp today, I appreciate all the wonderful information on here.  I can see there will be a great need not to stress and to be patient.  It is reassuring to me that our young people will be able to survive without us hovering over them.  I am really looking forward to getting his address.  I'm going to get some funny cards for him and send him photos.

I found it much more sad with him gone today, I really thought I would be ok but I felt very sad when I went and looked at his vacated room.  I'm so proud of him making it into the Navy and the nuke program.

My husband and I have our home up for sale and hoping to move to Utah from North Carolina.  I keep thinking I hope we don't sell it before my son gets out of BC and might come home before heading to A School.  We'll just have to see what happens.

Some sports and news article's can and will be taken from them. Family pictures are a HUGE help, and scanning a few on regular paper is a wonderful idea! Less bulky and if they get ruined in the shuffle they can be replaced. About the pay, their initial uniform allowance does not cover all uniform and incidental costs. They receive deducted pay throughout bootcamp to cover this. It does however take up to a month for their direct deposits to post to their account depending on when they get to bootcamp and get through their "P" days.

Leave is usually not granted in between bootcamp and "A" school.

Hope this helps.

In my son's form letter he said he needs money deposited into his acct. He didnt say how much. I'm wondering if I can stick a prepaid visa for around 50 bucks in the letter I'm sending him today and I'll go put some money into his account later. He must have kept his debit card and wallet, it wasnt in the box. Does anyone know if I can buy him a cash card and send it, or can I stick some cash into his letter? How much money do they need in BC? He just got there. Does anyone open the letters before our kids read them? I stuck bandages in them too, since people say the boots have to be broken in. I dont want to get him in trouble. (do they ever stop asking for money? lol)
Do not send cash to boot camp, they can get in trouble for that.  They don't need money during boot camp, nowhere to spend it.  They are issued a chit book for the NEX which covers all their needs, and that is deducted from their first paycheck.
Okay, thank you . He must have meant for his bills then, he said they're taking $ out of his check but I knew that was going to happen. I was pretty sure he didnt need 'walkin' around' money.  :~)
