My Son leaves for Great Lakes on the 26th. I have been preparing myself since September when he swore in but..... now that the day is fast approaching not so sure. Very proud of his choice to join the Navy. I am a planner so was wondering what kinds of personal items he will need after boot camp. He is staying at Great Lakes for A school. We are going to go to his graduation so I would like to get an idea of what personal items he will need so he can pack the things he wants such as clothes, laptop etc. I am sure for the most part he will be wearing a uniform but are there other time he will need civilian clothes? And if so what to bring. I know the winters are cold so not sure about winter coat and such? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you Spudsmom

He doesn't "need" any thing that he wasn't issued in bootcamp. What he may want is somthing different, but he can only have those items you listed after he checkes in to the "A" School..which may be the day of PIR, but which may also be a few days latter.  He can not take any items back to the bootcamp base.

Keep in mind what ever he has at the "A" School he will have to carry when he moves barracks, which happens a few times while they are there.

He can not wear civilian clothes until a few weeks after he starts "A" School...also he may change sizes while in bootcamp, so I wouldn't bring any clothes.  If he had a nice laptop and or e-reader already, than yes I would say take that for him, but if he didn't have those items, he can afford to go buy his own if he wants them.

I would bring some homemade cookies or goodies that he likes and some underware (for some reason the guys don't like the whitie tighties, lol) and the laptop...and not worry about anything else.  If there is something really special he wants, you can just mail it.

As far as the winter coat, they have a coat they can wear in civilian clothes that is good for winter, so no real need to get or have a speical coat for the winter whick takes up the extra space.

They are limited on the space they have.

His OWN underwear for sure. My son wanted his cell phone, whatever device your son has for music, laptop, and whatever other electrical device he thinks he has to have!!

Other than that, follow Angies advice and mail whatever else he needs, but most of the things he can get wherever he ends up. Mine went to the California Coast for A school, so a winter coat was not necessary to say the least.
