Scott is home on leave the first half of August and we are enjoying some great times together. We had a family party the first Saturday and he saw aunts and uncles he hasn't seen in awhile. All 3 of our kids were here for that and you know that doesn't happen often once you have one in the service! Scott and his GF took us out to eat Sunday morning and we met Lanie's parents for the first time. Then Scott and his "family" (girlfriend and her 3 year old boy) went swimming at my sister's yesterday. The water and air were the perfect temperature considering we've had such a hot summer. Just a few more days home and his car has been in the shop since last Friday (the engine went out). I hope they get it fixed on time for him. When he returns he's adding 3 years to his enlistment so he has about 5 1/2 years to go. GF may join him on the east coast eventually. GAIL, I can totally understand why Eric's GF would visit HI and not want to leave! I hope she is the "one" for him! And happy to hear he's got his quals done.

The Miami fire set back the dry dock operations another year. So they will be in Portsmouth NH almost 3 years before they're done.j

We have been in severe drought here but just had a wonderful rain this morning. I'm going to have to mow again this week. It's going to feel chilly the next few days as we drop into the 70's for the first time in a long time.

Thanks for letting us know your family is alright, Gail. I'm sure it does bring up a lot of bad memories. The whole nation is mourning with you. Take care.

How awful to be vandalized after an already devastating event. I'm glad your family has been safe, Gail. Are the fires under control? There's not much in our news lately about CO. Does Eric's boat stay in HI for dry dock? I hope all goes well with the girlfriend. It's been a hotter than usual summer and it slows me down. Take care, everyone.

Home base is Groton but the crew is currently in Portsmouth NH for the dry dock repairs. They live across the river in Maine and the housing is nestled among beautiful trees. It's a very nice community. Scott and another sailor split the cost of a 2 bedroom apt. Scott had a dorm room in Groton. I hope Jason doesn't have to live on the boat. They need a break from that :-)

Hi, Charlotte, I think 3 more years will be good for Scott. He does have a steady girlfriend now and discussed it with her first. They've made some long range plans for a couple years down the road. The boat was already in dry dock so the sailors have housing in the area. They were to be in dry dock for a normal re-fit for two years, which only started in March. So at least he's a landlubber for awhile and the area is beautiful. I look forward to visiting again. The sailors have a lot of watch duty and being a nuke, I think Scott has other duties as well.. We're from Michigan. I knew Scott had almost made up his mind not to re-enlist, but they made him a tremendous offer and he likes the $$$s.

I heard from Scott last week saying he's re-enlisting for an additional 3 years (so that will be 9 total). He has 5 1/2 to go at this point now. He got an excellent signing bonus. I never get used to missing him! Here's an update on the fire the USS Miami experienced in dry dock in May:

Hope you are all well. Charlotte, I'm so glad you heard from your boys :-) We had a week of 100+ and it's so dry here. I'm still overheated even though it went back to the 80's. What a hot summer!

Terry, so sorry for your loss - I hope your family is finding comfort in those who are still here. Thanks for reminding us that Gail could be in harm's way.

Gail, I hope you are safe and remain safe. Been praying they get these fires under control.

How is everyone? The crew of the Miami is busy repairing since the May fire.

Here's a project for you: Please check out Molly's Adopt a Sailor Project for July. I'm Mom of the Month and we have a wonderful group of sailors, airmen, and soldiers to support in Afghanistan. If you can be a one box mom/spouse/dad, every bit helps! When you go to the July discussion on Molly's be sure to click "follow" so you will get updates to the project. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hope you all are well and enjoying summer. It's a bit dry here in southern Michigan and very warm.

Gail, thanks for sharing about your dad's trip. What an experience!
At this time I only know the fire is out and they will start investigating soon. For now it is sealed up without oxygen to make sure all fires went out. All injuries were reported as minor and no one was hospitalized. I hope everyone near the fire was wearing gear to avoid breathing in the noxious fumes. Navytimes.com seems to be the place for updates but I'll let you all know if I find out more.

Fortunately Scott called me last night before I heard it on the news. It was his day off but he was called in after the fire started. the first thing they had to do was call family so we'd know they were OK. I haven't heard anything more from him but caught several news clips theoughout the day on the fire. Scott said the fire burned so hot that the plates glowed red. Makes you wonder if it will ever go to sea again. All ammunition had already been removed from that section and the nuclear reactor had been shut down for a couple months. Apparently the end opposite the fire was manned the entire time - can you imagine being on the boat knowing the other end was burning? Everyone is back to normal shifts tomorrow and the burnt section is still sealed to keep oxygen out so the fire doesn't start again. They will begin investigating soon and sailors that were on duty will be interviewed. Submarine fires are scary. Just glad it was in dry dock with everything explosive secured.
