This is the final test for the recruits before they become sailors.  It is an overnight drill held on a ship replica made by Disney, so it is very realistic....the recruits face every challenge that…Continue

I know one flight that didn't...mine. It is wild here...base is only allowing 'mission essential' personnel to work. It is frustrating to be snowed in at Great Lakes...even worse to be a mile away from our son and not be able to see him. I am glad for those of you who got their sailors overnight...that would have been awesome.

Approximately thirty nukes got off to South Carolina as well.  My son left at 6:00 am this morning out of O'Hare !!

Yes, they left at 6:17 a.m. on time, we saw our daughter off to Pensacola at the airport, think there was about 53 of them heading there and we have recently talked to her so they have made it to the base. They are very fortunate to have gotten out of Midway since it is currently closed.

Anyone know if the flights to A School got out this a.m.? My son was going to call me from the airport but haven't heard from him. He was heading to Pensacola but with this big snow storm I don't know if they made it out.

Golden Gator - wasn't it awful the last time you dropped him off?  Seeing him walk away in his black coat, black pants, black "cover" and the white scarf to shelter them from the bitter cold of the winter in Great Lakes.  I don't think I'll ever forget the picture in my mind of him turning to walk back down the sidewalk away from us in the waiting cab.  Nobody prepared me for that as well.  It was the most awful feeling in the world; my heart was broken and I couldn't even control the tears.

WOW, Sandy...Division 055 and 056 sure got the privileges taken away.  Heard from 055 that there were several times that while everyone else was able to get privileges, 055 was not.  Sounds like 056 got treated the same way.  At the same time, their all male divisions had a female Chief that was tougher than nails on them.  That's a shame that 056 didn't get to go to Ricky Heaven where the NEX, lounge area, pool tables and games as well as a variety of food items for purchase.  My son just loved the idea of getting out of his compartment for a change of mental pace.  Says that now that he is on his way to A-school (outside of Great Lakes) he is slowly feeling happiness returning to his soul.

Penny - I think liberty was at the RDC's discretion too.  My son said his division never went to Ricky Heaven because the RDC said there was unhealthy food for them to eat while there but also was a place to waist money.  My son was ok with that.  I would have never thought my boy would care how much money he spent on himself and junk food but he obviously learned a lesson while there.  The value of HIS dollar!!

Penny, our son moved across the street to GL for A school on Friday. Those who stayed there were allowed weekend liberty since they were no longer at RTC. Those who left Saturday or Monday and were still at the RTC might have had watch so they had to go back every night :-(( Atleast that is how they explained it to me.
Comment by diannep on February 1, 2011 at 1:54pm

Penny:  If you are talking about Sherry's post, he must have been a GradNGo to Great Lakes A School.  That is the only way to have full liberty, including overnights, for the sailors (and not all GradNGo sailors to GL get overnights).  I'm not sure why some GradNGos to GL have overnights and others don't though. Those who are not GradNGo to GL or are flying out for A School do not get overnights...only daytime liberty.

Unless you were referring to some sailors not following rules while on liberty that caused that sailor and others in that division to lose some liberty time???

Comment by Penny_Nuke_MM2_NimitzNuke on February 1, 2011 at 1:14pm
You just have to wonder what it is that makes some RDCs allow full weekend liberty and others not. We had ours back at the gate every night no later than 7:30 for fear of losing liberty hours the next day.

Hikermom, did you get a call from your sailor in the middle of the night calling from OHare or early this morning from Washington DC? Our sailor said that there were approximately thirty nukes at the airport with him heading to charleston. wow
