Thanks so much Karl! I wish that they had him see the cardiologist from the get go.  It would have saved a couple of weeks of worry so far, and this roller coaster of, "you're clear, oh, now you're not clear". My son keeps insisting that they are going to discharge him, because they are letting people go right and left for all kinds of things.  I wish that I could say that he is going forward with a fighting attitude, but not sure that is really the case.  He's been on an emotional roller coaster with  this, and being away from home( before the Navy, this kid was NEVER away from home for anything), so not sure how this is going to all work out.  I figured that his attitude is going to have a lot to do with this too.  So far, no one has asked him if he wants out.  Most of the talk around that is coming from other sailors, not the doctors, or his instructor.  Unfortunately, he isn't quite the fighter that I am.  I would be yelling~ "I WANT ON THAT SHIP!!"  LOL!  Thanks for all of your support, I truly appreciate it~ I knew I could count on all of you to be my bending ear.  I will keep you updated.  Keep praying that my son is going to be able to experience life on a ship and that he will be able to go forward in the Navy.  There is nothing here for him to go home to , and the opportunities and the things that these kids are going to get to see are priceless!  I just wish I could get him to fully understand that right now, and to fight as hard as he can!  Thank you all!

Sorry to hear of your sailors problems ACTmom - I hope everything works out OK. My son has had a pretty rough road and was placed on medical hold for quite a while and we went through the same worries you have about him being kicked out. While I can't say that I was thrilled with the Navy's medical treatment - my son's ailments never were resolved. I can say that I was happy with the Navy's apparent commitment to him. I received all kinds of warnings from people that the Navy would be eager to kick him out; as he had not been in for six months yet and they would not be responsible for long term care if they cut him at that stage. However, that wasn't the case - he repeatidily told them he wanted to stay in the Navy and ultimately he got back in school and is doing well. But they did ask him multiple times if he wanted out. A senior officer told me that the attitude of the sailor is the most important thing to the Navy. They have already made a big investment in him and if he keeps his chin up a remains commited - the Navy will remain commited to him.  Hopefully your sailor's medical issues can be resolved soon and he can move on with his Navy career. You will be in our prayers.

ACTmom - I, too, am so sorry to hear this.  But I can assure you that I will be praying for your son.  As moms, we need to stick together to hold up our sailors for their safety, health and mental calmness.  Please let him know that we all care for him.  With regard to the medical side, I sure don't know much about it.  I guess you would really have to have extensive testing to make sure there are no long-term effects of the heart murmur..at the same time, the pain in the chest area is surely cause for alarm.  I wish I could provide more but I got nothing!!  :(

Well, I'm popping in here to ask for some support from the very ones that gave me so much not too long ago.  My sailor is in Japan.  Supposed to be on USS George Washington, but he has been experiencing chest pains on and off since boot camp.  He was on leave for 30 days before leaving for Japan, so I had him go to Fort Knox(about an hr. from where we live) to get it checked out before he left.  well, they said that he had 2 valves in his heart that weren't working properly, and said for him to see a cardiologist once he got to Japan. When, he got to Japan, he was at the bardge, waiting to get all of his processing done.  He saw a doctor, who said that he wouldn't be seeing a cardiologist because Fort Knox was to refer him to the hospital when he got there, which they didn't.  So, they did a small check up, and cleared him for duty.  A week later, he is having chest pains again, and so now they decide to send him to cardiologist. They had 6 doctors listen to his heart, and have now decided that he has a heart murmur, and have put him on medical hold.  He saw a cardiologist, who now has referred him to another cardiologist next Monday.  He has someone following him while he is on med hold to make sure that nothing happens to him, and he will not go on this next deployment.  He has been assigned a case rep., and well, things have really got me worried, because it's looking like they are moving towards discharging him for this.  I have a heart murmur, but have never had problems with it.  I'm so upset.  Have any of you heard anything about discharges, or know what I might expect.  He does not want to be discharged, and I don't want him to either!  The stress of it, is like going through bootcamp all over again.  Will he make it?  Well, just needed to vent.  I will keep everyone posted, and I'm hoping that we will be able to report good news.  He hasn't even been able to perform his job, or get his feet wet on his ship yet!  This really sucks!  I want for him to so bad  to be able to serve out his time, but not feeling very positive about it anymore.  Thanks for letting me vent.  So glad to hear of your sailors doing well, and hope that everyone is doing well.  So sorry to hear about everything in Joplin  Cheryl.  It's been such as bad year for bad weather!  Hoping that it will all be over for everyone!  Everyone take care!

My sailor is at Norfolk too, assigned to the USS Harry S. Truman which is also in dry dock until at least next year.  We took his Jeep to him a couple of weeks ago but he's still 20 hours away. We live and work near Joplin, Mo where he was born and he tried to get emergency leave to come back to help but since none of our family members died he can't come. For once I'm glad his reason wasn't good enough, our family is all safe, lots of friends, co-workers lost their homes and family members though. Spent the day in Joplin today, our church is disbursing supplies to victims. It's horrendous, beyond description. Lots of military working there, God bless them, it's going to be many years to get back on track.
