MGI Bill / Post 911

Lots of information on this and its seems to be changing here are some things to do immediately.

  1. Go to your nearest college’s Veterans department they will start you on your way. You can apply online at the VA’s webpage to start the process for funding. YOU want to speak to someone at the college, they will certify the classes to insure they will be paid for by the VA.  You will need to send in your DD214 Member-4 form. Funding can take awhile so start the ball rolling immediately. We paid out of pocket for the first semester and it has been reimbursed.

  1. As of right now you can also apply for Pell Grants (Free money that does not have to be paid back, based on income can be up to $5500 a year) There is word that they may not allow vets getting the GI bill to also get the Pell Grant, but while they do take advantage of it!!! Go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and fill out the free fasfa form, you will need your taxes to complete this form.  Pat Tillmans family also has a scholarship fund, we have not looked into this personally, just wanted to make you aware its there if you choose to apply.

  1. Did you pay into the MGI Bill? You have to decide which benefit you want to use, MGI or Post 911. You have to declare which one you want to use the VA website has information comparing the two.

  1. Check your colleges VA department for the Veterans Upward Bound program. You can get assistance with Math and English skills without having to take a class. This is an AWESOME program; my son is currently getting help with math. They will even PAY YOU a small amount to attend!! Lets face it while in the military a lot of the guys aren’t using REAL English just military English.. This gives you an opportunity to improve your skills before taking a college entrance test.. I personally like this program because it might help you test into a higher level of math or English which will save you time when taking classes!

Well this is a start.. will add more and update later!!

Thanks for the information.

My son is signing up this August to use the GI Bill.  He thought he was all signed up until he gets

the 'call' from the school telling him all kinds of things.  I am now reverting back to this site to get

use full info to help him out.

I think he learned his lesson to go directly to the campus VA office and 'start' there first.

Thanks again for the info!

Mary
