Michie....thanks so much for your reply!  That brings much comfort.  What's an SO group? GSM wasn't my son's first choice either which is probably why it concerns me.  He wants to be sheriffs but it still considering firefighter after service.  The jobs that would make sense for that were not available & he just wanted to get started with his future.  He's capable of a lot & I'm sure he'll be fine but I'm his mom and I find it hard to stop mothering! hahA!  Good Luck to your son in school.  I would love to stay in contact!

JJ4Navy-I feel your frustration.  My son recently started GSM Aschool.  He is a recent drop from an SO group, so it wasn't his first choice.  I, the have-to-know-mom feel like I've looked everywhere for more information, but I'm not coming up with much. My son also has college plans, and as he gets more comfortable in A school he feels like he'll have more time to persue that path with this rate.  If I've learned anything, it's that there are so many options in the Navy.  They take time and effort, but they're there.

Enjoy PIR.  Since he's staying at GL you'll get lots of time with him :)

No problem.

Take a box of tissue, you will need it! It really was an emotional day that I will never forget! It was the first time our son was away from us for an extended amount of time. Now its just something you have to deal with! Basic breaks both the sailor and family in!

MNnavymom thank you so much for your response!  It's nice to hear from someone who actually has a son with experience.  I am extremely proud and very excited about the PIR.  We are going, wouldn't miss it for the world.  In fact, we have a lot of family members that want to attend, but our immediate family takes up the 4 tickets.  Grandparents might come anyway just to celebrate & see him after.  Thanks again!

@JJ4Navy

My son is a GSE/fireman on a destroyer. He loves his job. The only thing he has a problem with is how old and broken down his ship is. With all of the cut backs it doesn't make his job any easier. I would not worry about it. From what I understand its an important job and its something he should be proud of and you too. GSE & GSM....its not a glamorous job, its loud and dirty but its important. Plus.....right now you are dealing with all of the unknowns with basic, that there is enough to throw you off emotionally. Don't listen to the negative, I am sure there is plenty of that out there. Just stick with your PIR group and concentrate on the big day!! Are you able to go to the PIR? The whole thing...basic and PIR is such an emotional rollercoaster!! But its a fun ride!!

No worries!! Best of luck!

JJ4navy my son graduated bc april 5th. He is now in school at Great Lakes as a engine man/firemanWhat does gsm stand for. My son has been talking alittle about seebees. Just wondering if he will stay in Great Lakes for school if he decidds to go with seebees or will he have to transfere to another area.

my son is in bc pir 6/14  he will stay in gl for a school gsm.  that's all I know & it's all so confusing.  ive gone on other pages & people speak so negatively about gsm's.  Is my son in for an awful experience in the navy.  prior to recruitment, he was told it was a great job.  he would like to get his bachelors while still serving.  if he does not make it a career he would like to be sheriffs or fireman.  he is also interested in special team opportunities that he was told was available in the navy.  he's in as a gsm, but does someone have some insight as to why all the negative comments about gsm/gse that I've read elsewhere? Just looking to hopefully calm my mama's heart.....especially since he hasn't called or written yet.  He just finished wk 2 of bootcamp

MNnavymom,

Yes, we will be there.  I'm looking forward to PIR but not the cold...hopefully it will warm up by then.
