From what I gathered it was based on time, but my husband was house crew leader (while he was on hold) and he phased up really quickly. About New Orleans he went twice this summer, he went with a group of sailors since it is with in the mile range. They did have to have liberty buddies, but families can sign their sailor out so they don't have to have a liberty buddy. They went to a lot of places on the weekends they went to Flora Bama, and even Pensacola. If you are into good food in Biloxi there is a restaurant called Aunt Jenny's, best catfish I've ever had!
They do have 3 phases they go through. My husband was on phase 1 for about a month. He couldn't leave the base for about the 1st 2 weeks after that he could leave with a liberty buddy, but had to be back at night to muster. Also New Orleans is not off limits when they are in phase 3. My husband went there twice this past summer while he was in school.
I don't have much more to add. My son went the following morning but that was at the time only a few divisions went out the next day. He's had a good experience in MS but his time there will be ending when he grad C school in July! Good luck!
we're going down to MS. in March to visit our son. Looking forward to warmer temps. :0) Our son left the next morning also after BC to MS. maybe that's common for AG's. Good to see activity here.
My son just went to Boot Camp and will be going to Mississippi immediately following graduation for AG School. Any information would be great.
