Proud AG Mama I just thought of more questions to ask you! My SR two weeks away from PIR now.  Thank you for the tips you had given me earlier in December.  I was wondering if they stay in "ships" at A school or is it different since they are at an Air Force base?  Also, can they eventually add a blanket of their own?  I had heard that at some of the A schools they can do that.  Thanks!

It is nice to have a fellow AG mom to talk to. My sailor was actually in with like 3-4 that all went to Biloxi together and then some of his A School buddies went to Norfolk. I think there is one sailor there at Norfolk that has been with him since BC.

So you are waiting on your letter and first call? Write every day. It will do your sailor and you good. My husband and I both wrote every day. It makes the sailor's day to get mail.

Make sure to have your phone with you at all times. Answer all calls whether you know the number or not, in particular 847 area code. That first call was such a blessing and so eased my stress and nervousness. He was so confident and handling it all so well. Not all first calls go that well, but what a blessing it was. No matter how your sailor sounds make sure to do nothing but encourage him in your letters and phone call.

Any time you have a question or just want to catch up drop me a line.

My son shipped out Dec 8th and PIR is Feb 5th. I did read about the weekly schedule, etc for bc so that has been helpful. His recruiter said he is only the 2nd AG they have ever put thru. Sounds like there is one other in his PIR group. Thank you for the tips and yes, I agree with you...we will give him his electronics at the airport! It is nice to have someone that is ahead of us on this journey.

We had our sailor pack before he left for BC, which we brought to him at BC. We drove so it wasn't an issue. He went through his bag, kept some and we brought some back. The big thing is underwear. My hubby says bring what you saw him in the most. They aren't allowed to wear civilian clothes for awhile at A School. They have to phase up to level 2 or 3 before they can wear anything besides the uniform outside of their room.

Very important, they can't have any electronics back at the base when you bring them back after PIR.  You have to give that type of stuff to them at the airport. Some sailors risked being caught, but we told our sailor it wasn't worth the risk.

They will have to be able to carry everything they take to A School by themselves and don't have much room at A School or elsewhere. So, they have to be particular about what they keep.

Here is another great pointer. My husband found a phone app that recorded all his incoming cell calls. He used it just on a trial basis. So, it didn't cost anything. It meant that I didn't stress about missing the I am a Sailor call. I enjoyed it just as much listening to the conversation as if I was there.

There are less than 1,000 AG's in the Navy. It is a very small group. I would guess that it is easy to make a name for oneself, for the good or bad. The advancement rate is 100% to E4, like 70% for E5 and 80% for E6.  This will become important down the road.

When did your sailor ship out? Have you researched about battle stations and their weekly schedule?

Thank you! Also, did you take him any of his old clothing or do you send a few things later?

Good evening. Ask Away.

Yes, he took a phone to A School along with a laptop. We gave him these things at the airport on his way to A School.

His first duty station is and was Norfolk Weatherfleet. He had a few places he could pick from. They do a dream sheet towards the end of A School listing their preferences. His top 3 choices were Norfolk, San Diego and Stennis (not the shop).

AG A School is very competitive, at least his was. I think the average school through school in his class was like 96%. The class behind him was like 80%. If you get top score, you get advanced and get your pick of stations, depending on the Navy's need of course though.

Make sure your sailor takes advantage of RAP between A School and his first station. That is where a sailor gets leave, but gets part of it credited back if they help out at the recruiters office. BUT make sure he follows up and stays on the paperwork. My sailor did RAP and turned the paperwork in at least twice, but didn't get credit because it was claimed they never got the paperwork.

There will be a delay between the end of BC and the beginning of A School waiting to class up. During this time your sailor will be doing odd jobs around the shared Air Force/Navy base in Biloxi.

Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you. Enjoy the ride!

Proud AG Mama, I have a few questions...Did your son take a phone to A school?  Also, where was his first duty station?  My son is very excited about being an AG.

Hey guys! Great to see activity on here. My sailor graduated BC on June 24, 2014 and AG A School on Oct 3, 2014. Then off to his first duty station.  What questions come to mind for you? I am more than happy to answer anything I can.
