Hi MissKathyMc. congratulations on your daughter's decision to go Navy! She is about to embark on the trip of a lifetime (figurativelly and literally)! And a new world will open up for you also. At least that was my experience when my son joined. I have no other family in the military (except for veterans of WWII) so I knew next to nothing about the military. I have also learned alot about the world, since David has been overseas in the far east for 3 years.
You're not too far from me. I live in Birmingham. You can certainly count on support from me and the other local moms on this site! Nancy

Hey Linda, we can't wait for David to come back in April, seems like he's been gone forever, and Norfold will seem so close compared to Japan. David is 22. He graduated from highschool at 17, went to college for a year and then joined the Navy right when he turned 19. After bootcamp, he spent 6 months in A and C schools at Virginia Beach and then went to Japan. He has sailed on the Kitty Hawk and George Washington carriers all over the far east. He has about 3 1/2 more years of service. He enlisted for 6 years (job requirement) and then added 1 more year for a bonus, so he will have 7 total when he finishes. He has no desire to re-enlist. He wants to finish his degree and continue his career (although he's not exactly sure what that career will be yet). The Navy has been good for him but he has no intention of making a career out of it.

Hi Linda, yes Clay-Chalkville is the highschool. My son and daughter graduated from there. Yes, David is far away. He has been coming home each year in the spring. We went to meet him in Hawaii this summer but his schedule was changed at the last munute so we missed him (but we still had a great time in Hawaii). We did get to see him in San Diego in August. And thankfully, next spring he will be coming back to the US for good. He will then be stationed in Norfolk for shore duty. Do you go see your son in DC? Or does he come home? Nancy

Hi everyone, I just found this group. I don't know how long this group has existed, but I've been looking for something like this for a long time. Living in Alabama and having a child in the Navy is a rare thing (or so it seems to me)! I haven't been able to find any Navy moms in my area (on or off the internet), the Marines and the Arrny, yes, but not the Navy. I live in Birmingham (actually Clay, just outside) and my son has been stationed in Atsugi, Japan for 3 years. He serves with the airwing that is attached to the USS George Washington. I believe I saw some comments from others on here about the GW. Anyway, just wanted to say hello and to say that I'm so thankful that I'm not alone in Alabama!!!!
