Getting our kids from the airports to Groton after leave: credit to N4D site...

I called the school's duty office this morning and they have a "duty driver" that will pickup the reporting students at BDL or PVD. According to the person I spoke with, the new students will have an assigned facilitator who should have airport and flight information for the incoming students and will coordinate their ground transportation. I am assuming this is part of the reason why we have to send their itineraries to the "Scheduling Office" (Scheduling.Office@navy.mil) by December 7th.
Just incase they arrive home for the holiday break without confirmation that their ground transportation has been arranged, we can call the duty office (860-694-3748) before they start the return trip with their arrival information and they will make sure the duty driver picks them up.

I wonder if this is the same for all of the schools

When I spoke to the duty office I was told to be sure to give sailor's phone # to driver & for sailor to keep in contact w/ them in case of any flight delays.
The people in the office are very helpful & can answer ?s anyone may have.

NDG....  I been so worry in how to get my son to Groton, thank you so much for posting this info.

A is calling Groton today; I'll let you know what he finds out.  I've been telling people he is heading to A school but per A; he goes through BESS first, then A school.......Basic Enlisted Submarine School.

Found this link to their daily schedule:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_Enlisted_Submarine_School

Here is a video on BESS:  http://www.navy.mil/ahtv.asp?id=14176

Sailors then choose an area of study, specialing in 1 of 4 rates:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_Enlisted_Submarine_School

Lori thanks for the links! Very informative.... I must admit watching the BESS video brought back memories of worrying about him in BC all over again! Here we go again! :)

I will be driving N down on 1/2. When is everyone else going?

 Penny

Penny - A has to report on Tuesday, 7:00 A; he leaves tomorrow a.m. from Michigan.  When he contacted Groton last week whomever he spoke to didn't have much he could tell him.  He asked what he could bring and they said "you will be debriefed upon arrival."  So, he is taking his Cell, iPod, Laptop in a black back pack and his sea bag - that's it for now and he is a bit uncertain if it is appropriate to bring the laptop at this juncture.  He has decided to take and if necessary he will pay to send it home if he can't keep it.  It seems that BESS is somewhat different than A school so I don't know........the good news it, A gets there before your N so I hopefully can give you some useful information before you are packing him up.  Lori
I received a nice reply from "Kathy" from the Groton site; her son graduated BC early November.  She confirmed with me (contacted her son too) that bringing a laptop, etc. to Groton is fine.  A took a black back pack with his computer, skype eye, camera, iPod, a framed picture and a toilettre bag (all liquids less than 3 oz in a ziploc) with him today.  His flight seems to be leaving Chicago on time so he should arrive RI by noon today.  With any luck the duty driver can make it from base to pick him up!  Once he is settled in and I hear from him, I'll let you know what is permissible.  "Kathy" even said civy clothing was o.k.  She said there is a bowling alley on base.  I'll forward you her note so you can see what she said.  She mentioned an "electronics kit" would be necessary for the computer or maybe the xbox.....A didn't take his xbox yet.  I hadn't thought to have A take a network cord to base with him as we are so used to wi-fi.  Hoping he can get one at the NEX or I'll send one to him overnite as I have lots.  Will update you on this as well once I talk to him.

Lori, Thanks again for forwarding the info. And I see here the answer about the computer. Did you call the number to make sure that there would be a shuttle to pick him up. IB has the number too, so he said that he was planning on calling before he left. I will think good thoughts about A's trip, poor timing on the weather's part :-(. Sounds like they have a little more storage room that we were envisioning. IB said that he would like to take a computerized frame with him so we need to do that before he goes, or ship it to him. That way he can have lots of pictures; one frame.

Yes, he called the duty driver from home with his arrival time and then called again when he landed.  There were several sailors arriving so he had to wait at the airport for about 4 hours before the van left.  Processing was simple, a PO reviewed his orders and stamped them.  He then waited about 4 more hours for a PO to give him a tour and show him to his room.  He called me about 11:30 P when he was finally to his room!  He is loving it thus far.  Room mates aren't there still so he has yet to meet them.  A computer frame will be perfect!  By the way, even with the poor weather, all flights were on time - the only delay was the Navy van to transport him.  Even said the roads to base were o.k.  All news is good thus far!
