I talked w/my son this morning and he was a mix of eagerness, excitement, and a bit of nervousness. Sort of like Christmas Eve when he was a kid! How nice your son could spend quality time with family before the big day. I wish I could have seen them off but maybe I'll get down there to welcome them back. Will you be putting the video on youtube?
I didn't go, but my ex-husband did. He took photos and sent them to me and even a video that he is sending me on disk. They spent the day yesterday together and went to dinner. He said my son was nervous, but in a good way, and that he was excited. He got a tour of the boat, saw pretty much everything and said he feels better about it all. He even gave my son and extra hug for me.
Hi Pam and welcome! This was a stressful day for a lot of us but I find comfort in the fact that everyone is well trained and eager to set out to do what they've prepared to do. I can't tell you how proud I am of not only my son, but of everyone aboard! What an adventure they will have! I was wondering if anyone had the opportunity to see them off?
Hi Lori,
My son Josh is on the USS Simpson that left this morning. This is my first time going thru this. I already miss him!
Thanks Lori. My son seems to have been welcomed into that family pretty quickly and that's a huge weight off of my mind (and his, I imagine). It seems to be a good group of men!
I'm with you whatelks lol but my box is mostly in my head at the moment :)
ok should I be ashamed to say that I have a box ready to go, and it's getting mailed the same day they leave, so it will be there soon. lol. I'm so glad my brothers were mil. so this isn't so new to me, though things really have changed over the years.
Thanks Patricia, I thought I read back a ways that the packages were taking forever so I really will start filling one. It will make me feel useful anyway. My son said it's impossible to get an extension cord on the ship, even to do a job and that EVERYTHING has to be cleared by the electrician (whatever his rate is lol). I said "why don't you just buy a great big multi-outlet extension cord with your own money - get it cleared - and run it from the outlet over the racks that you say is impossible to use otherwise? This is the kid who arrived at school in Great Lakes and was told there was no internet in the BAQs, got a mobile hot spot the next day and charged his roommates each for 1/3 of the monthly cost and saved them a fortune over using paid/inconvenient access across the base, and they loved him. NOBODY had ever thought of it! I'm pretty sure he'll have it ALL figured out before they get too far out to sea lol.
"Stopping up holes in the hull." Oh my gosh. Too funny!!! Caroline, my son says the same thing about storage, that there's so little space that it's insane. No place to charge stuff, no place to store stuff, and absolutely no space in the bunk. The long-sleeved tees were recommended to my son from an officer, so I figure that's smart advice. I also heard it will take 3-4 weeks for packages to get to them. Heck, it already takes a month for him to get his regular mail here in the US! Don't forget to include a customs form in the box when you send it out!
I laid awake the other night just wondering where those socks go lol. I know that stuff gets "disappeared" and stuff gets "borrowed" and stuff gets worn out but are they stopping up holes in the hull with these socks or what? Monica, I mentioned the egg crate idea to my son just now and he said there's barely enough room to roll over as it is so he won't give up another inch! I know he doesn't like tight places so I don't know how much he's exaggerating there but that's not the first one I've heard that from hahaha. Patricia, have they been advised to get long-sleeved shirts to protect against mosquitos/Malaria? That's one I certainly didn't think of either! I feel like starting my first care package now, since it probably won't get there for a while anyway. Is that silly? He also said that there are very few places to plug things in - like to charge phones/computers/DVD players - and none where you don't have to stay and watch for fear of them being "borrowed". I wonder if he just hasn't found the right place yet...
