My sailor mentioned he went out and bought long sleeved tee-shirts to protect against malaria.  I would have never thought to send him something like that.  There's a guy in our church who is well versed in sending military care-packages and he tells me over and over again that *anything* from home is greatly appreciated . . . we really can't go wrong in sending anything from the heart!!  My sailor requested personal products like deodorant and calf-high black socks.  How those socks keep disappearing is beyond me!

Caroline- My son doesn't really know what to expect either.  I guess they will just have to learn along the way.  I think this is hard on us mothers because we just want them to have everything they need, but it's tough because they don't even know yet.  I know they will be OK and make do with what they have.  I bet they will love getting the care packages.  The ombudsman is great!  I love getting the info because I need all the help I can get!

My son didn't really know what to expect - I guess some ships are very particular about quarters and others aren't.  A friend told him to take a sleeping bag and he thought he was joking.  Yesterday he told me it's 55 degrees down there and he got a sleeping bag lol!  I'll have to ask him about the egg crate - great idea!  I have told him what everyone has said about the socks and underwear and I think he's only just now starting to believe me but he doesn't want me to spend money  on him.  I'll just send stuff in every care package and he'll hush lol.  The ombudsman finally got the information/verification she needed so she could add me to her page and start sending me emails so now I am reading like a mad-woman and wishing I could turn the clock back :)

When my son was home at Christmas, he said he only needed a few things and he would be ready.  He was wrong or either didn't want to bother with it then because when I talked to him Monday, the list he gave me was crazy!  I hope he has somewhere to store all the stuff. Between me, my mom, and his girlfriend the car truck is full.  He did ask for a foam egg crate mattress pad which did take up a lot of space.  At least that is one thing he want have to store and it may make sleeping a little more comfortable.

Well my son loves to read, he's a huge Mitch Albom fan, and I've gotten him some others, too.  I wanted to get my son a portable DVD player, but he said, no.  So I guess I'll sink the money I would have spent on it, on dvd's, etc.  So hopefully he will be well supplied on ship.

Spencer is not a reader which kills me because I LOVE to read.  I'm hoping that changes with his changing circumstances lol.  I will ask my other son what kind of DVDs he might like.  He generally watches them on his computer.  I wanted to get him a portable DVD player for Christmas but my other son said he would just use the computer.  Now I'm wondering if that's really the case.  Do they have plenty of outlets to charge batteries, etc?  Thanks for the heads-up Lori, it always helps to know they look kindly on "new blood" lol.

Is there not a central room with a DVD player, or do they need their own???  I'm actually ingraving my sailors name on anything i can, so far though not too much.  I think i'll dye all his undies pink, no one will steal those, and if they do, well it'd be kind of obvious-I wish, but I think my son would kill me.

Good morning everyone!  I loved having my son home on leave but he eventually had to return to Great Lakes to get his "hard" orders for the Simpson!  He is now on the road (driving himself) and more than halfway there, to report to the ship on Monday.  He's excited to "finally feel like a sailor" (he's been in schools since March) but not too crazy about being the new guy lol.  Yesterday, I got my password for the ship's web page.  You are right, there's nothing there since 2008 and that's only pictures!  I hope someone will pick that up again when/after they deploy.  The ombudsman messaged me a couple of days ago, asking ME where my son was hahaha. He's SO independent (and doesn't want me to "waste" my money) that I'm eager to hear of anything that I can send him that will help or entertain him while he's on board..

Ladies, get them boys in gear for their taxes.  If they have someone do them at home there is paperwork they gotta have done up for you to be able to do it. I'd hate for anyone not to get it done in time.  If they did them online last year, make sure you have their username and password for the tax software they used so that it can be signed electronically, and have the banks routing number and account number so those refunds can be direct deposited into their accounts.
