Hey there.  I'm new to this site-duh!  My son joined the Simpson in mid Oct. of this year.  I'm hoping I get lots of info here, for the upcoming trip.  My son was just home for the holiday and he seemed upbeat about everything, for the most part-nothing is perfect right!  My son, Ethan, gave me some suggestions for things he'd like and they were all useful items, you know socks, t-shirts, body wash, etc.  So we went out and I bought up lots from Bath and Body Works and he picked the scents(the male section that is)  this way, each time I send a box, I'll send him items he picked out, and things he needs.  And then he said to throw in any surprise items that I wanted, but he said to picture a plastic shoe box, and whatever I got had to fit in that box.  Any better suggestions from the veterans here????

God Bless You for asking the question that is already plaguing me lol

I'm disappointed (but not surprised) about no women on the tiger cruise because I knew about the gender issues.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll at least have a family day!!  I'm off to do some Christmas shopping.  Does anyone have Christmas gift ideas for a sailor on a frigate whose personal space is small?  Last Minute Nellie that I am would prefer not to do mail-order but at this late hour am open to all ideas!  Thanks!

Are there no women on this ship, or just not many?

Comment by PatriciaT on December 10, 2011 at 12:05pm

Lori, did you go on a tiger cruise before?  I was thinking maybe the frigate class wouldn't do one because they're so small and might not have the space to segregate the sexes.  Details, girl, details please!!

Congratulations to Josh then!  Thanks for the information, I will spent the next several minutes looking up "PSI" and "Tiger Cruise" now lol

Good morning!  Y'all are making me feel really good about my son's future on this ship.  I had a good feeling when I found it was a "small" ship because I told him that he would not feel "lost" like with an aircraft carrier and he could go places that  the big ships and the nukes can't.  More importantly, I said that a small ship couldn't flourish with a contentious/dissatisfied crew and a good captain would make sure that didn't happen.  You ladies are reinforcing that for me because I was just winging it there lol.  I understand about not giving out details and I trust you will only tell me what you can and then I will learn more from the ombudsman eventually?  Patricia, you mentioned that you were planning ahead (no, you are not "nuts", or you are just like me at least hahaha) - will their homecoming date be that reliable?  I am an RN and our schedules go out way in advance (I make the schedule but can't break my own rules...)  I would like to plan to be there for sure, but I'm worried about requesting time off only to find it's a different date and then another different date...  Lori, has Josh requested a new rate or school or assignment or do they reassign sailors often?  My son is really excited about finally getting out of school and really feeling like he's in the Navy!

You're going to think we're nuts, but my hubby and I already are making plans for their homecoming and they haven't even left yet!  We're in NJ and the distance sort of forces us to plan ahead, especially on the financial end.  I agree with Lori--my son has felt very comfortable with his shipmates, officers, schooling, rate, etc.  It *is* a great ship.

Hi ladies, thanks for your postings!  I have contacted the Ombudsman and she is waiting for confirmation before she can say much.  I have registered for a password for the web page and haven't heard about that.  My son is still waiting for the "hard copy" of his orders but I guess it's coming and he's getting excited.  He graduated today and is officially a GSE-FR - I think I said that right lol.  I haven't seen him since July and he gets 2 weeks leave starting the 18th through the 2nd and he knows - from a friend who has has had Simpson orders for a little while longer - that there is a deployment coming up but he doesn't know exactly when that is or exactly when he reports to the ship.  We actually have family in the area and I live about 9 - 10 hours away in NC.  I'm so glad to hear that your sailors like where they are!

Lori, the youtube videos were great and I explored and found a few more.  It looks like a great ship :)

Hi Caroline and welcome!  My son has been on the Simpson since July 2011.  He's been on several aweighs but mostly has been either in GA or FL for further training.  He is very much looking forward to the next deployment and overall has enjoyed nearly every minute of his time w/the Navy.  Lori, thnx for the youtube you posted.  Really made me feel like I was there!
