I just sent him an email about a picture of the cross..I'd like to see it too!
I missed doing it as a birthday box, but it could be for anything. I've been cutting out comic strips that I know he would love. I can line the box with them.
@Linda, did you hear anything about the Easter service? I would love to see a picture of the cross he made.
Ladies, I don't know how many of you sew, but we could have a project coming up for the ship. Sailors and marines. Have to get it approved by the FRG first.
I would LOVE to get a real email from my son! His are about one sentence long... maybe two on a good day! And he never answers any of my questions, unless I threaten to not send a goody box! :-) That is a cool idea with the box, the last one we sent we took multi colored index cards and wrote a bunch of notes on them and taped them to the inside of the box. I saw a really neat "birthday in a box" that someone put together for a deployed sailor, I may try and do something like it for my son's birthday in June. I love how they used pictures on that box though.
Helen, great idea! He is going to love that. And hey guys, sorry that post of mine was so long. I got carried away. I was excited about finally getting a "real" Email from him. And from what my son said Helen, everyone was allowed to go to shore at some point while they were there.
Cool idea from pinterest. Decorate the INSIDE of the package and then fill!
@Reba, apparently it is. I'm hoping he's received one of his care packages. He had an awesome birthday, so I'm happy.
@Teresa, that's fantastic! Good to see they are enjoying themselves. I cant wait to hear if my son was able to go ashore at some point.
We finally got an Email from our son yesterday. And this time rather than a single paragraph it was a long one! We were so happy to get it. He said they had spent two days in Souda bay Crete. He said the shops were all in a continuous line and each house had a small orchard of olive or fruit trees about the size of a small garden. He said the houses were all very neat, even the poorer parts of town. They had taken a bus to the top of a mountain that over looked the city of Chania. He mentioned a couple of funny things as well. One was he and some friends went to the poorer section of town in hopes of seeing more of the "real culture" but began seeing graffti on the walls and got scared and they saw one cat eating another dead cat. He said people who owned the shops would stand out front and try to get them to come in. They were hungry and looking for a place to eat then realized they had so used to saying no that they were turning down restaurant owners which didn't make any sense lol. So the next one that asked they went inside. He had a dish made of greek yogurt and cucumbers which he said was pretty good. And awww, he thought of us, he said he got us some pottery that had Greek Gods on it which a local potter had made and got my husband a couple of packs of Greek cigarettes (he collects tobacco items) and he and some friends went to a bar, he's only 18 but it is legal there. That was his first exsperience in a bar or drinking. He said it was fun but he probably won't do it again. Keeping my fingers crossed on that one.
Looking up Souda bay on google earth and looking at pictures of it it is beautiful. Crystal clear blue water, the houses and countryside is postcard perfect, snow capped mountains in the background. He said several cruise ships were also in the bay. I'm glad they got to go somewhere nice and see these things.
Email from my son....."Everyday feels like groundhog day." lol I can only imagine.
Finally heard from my son, he sounds really upbeat and excited about what they are doing (don't know). Today is his birthday and he's been getting lots of birthday wishes. He said his birthday has been awesome.
I'm keeping the sailors/soldiers and their families in my prayers. Praying for protection, wisdom and peace. We're in it for the long haul.
Pictures look a little stretched out...but I love seeing the smiles on their faces!
