Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Make sure to read our Community Guidelines and this Navy Operations Security (OPSEC) checklist - loose lips sink ships!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

A School

After Boot Camp, my son goes to A school for AECF. Wher do they live during this time? Can he have his bicycle shipped and/or violin? Sharonclips

That's mine's rate too. He will be staying in GL next week as well. I've read that they have limited space in their barracks and to wait and see what kind of room and rules they have before shipping anything, or giving them anything.

I definately will not send or bring anything. I wonder how school will be different from boot camp.

Probably still really strict, but at least they will have access to the rest of the world, and we can go see them. No contact kills this over protective mom...lol

He will be in one of the barracks (called ships), and will have several roommates.  They each have a locker and most personal items must be locked up when not in use.  Some get permission for TVs or game systems, and most have their laptops and cellphones.  Cellphones can only be used on their free time, not taken to school, and not when they are walking in uniform.  They earn the privilege to wear civilian clothes in a couple weeks.  Most of what they need, they can get at the NEX.

I don't know about bikes, but he can have his violin for sure.  I would wait until he knows the best way to ship it; their mail goes to mail rooms and fedex/ups do not deliver directly to individual sailors in the barracks.

Hello, does anyone know what other things they can have in A school at GL. Things like toiletries, blankets, own pillow.

Toiletries are fine, as is their own pillow.  Blankets, that varies by barracks, some make them put the personal bedding away when not in use and make up the rack with the issued blanket/sheets.

You probably have an answer to this already, but they can have almost anything. They have a lot of space. Sometimes they need a chit to have things out, but those are granted without any issues.
