The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

David chose 5 inch guns. His ship will be USS Antietam in San Diego, which is a cruiser, and his C school is also San Diego. He just finished A school and "picked" orders yesterday, so I guess he has to wait for his hard copy orders. Not quite sure how this works. He says he does not know for sure when he will be sent to San Diego.
Mary, wish I had the answer to your question. I can only imagine each type of C-School has different starting dates. Hard copy orders usually do not appear for a minimum of two to three weeks after graduation. My Nick got his 5 weeks after graduation. Vee's grandson Michael graduated 2 weeks prior to Nick still has not gotten his. I do not understand why, they are both going to the same school, base and ship. Nick will be taking leave for Christmas then return to Great Lakes on 3 Jan 2010 for about 2 weeks then take a leave again prior to reporting to San Diego. The second leave will be a combination of RAP Duty with the recruiter and driving time to California. No matter how you look at it he graduated A-School 3 Oct 09 and has to wait three months total before starting C-School. I will bet David will know something before he starts Christmas leave. Gary T.
Thank you, Gary, I'm so glad you have my back. You are a jump ahead of me now with Nick receiving his orders, and are in a better position to field some of these questions. Still waiting on this end, and you will be the first to know when Michael receives his orders and lets me know. Take care my friend, and have a great weekend! Vee
Hi Mary, there isn't much I can add to Gary T's reply below. Michael is still waiting for the hard copy of his orders. He graduated A School on 9/18/09 and is still waiting. He had always progressed through his Navy career 2 weeks ahead of Nick Twardoski (Gary T's son) until now, so I don't understand why he is still waiting. At least he has been moved over to Will's ship with the other sailors who are on hold; has his vehicle and a little more freedom which helps the morale quite a bit. He really feels he won't be out of GL until mid-December. He also chose the 5 inch guns. Hang in there tough Navy Mom...Hugs, Vee
Hi Mary, Congratulations to David!!! I am curious if he will be following or leading in the footsteps of Gary's Nick and my Michael if he is going to V.L.S. school for the 5" guns. Let us know the details as Gary mentioned in his post. Michael still has not received his final orders. Hugs, Vee
Mary, I may have mislead you on my post about Michael going to V.L.S. school for the 5" guns. Gary T has corrected me that they are two different things. So, as soon as I talk with Michael again, I will set myself straight and correct my post. Thanks, Gary T, for catching this. I honestly think it is V.L.S. C School....but will let you know. Vee
Susan, I am so sorry to hear about your daughters injury. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. I surely hope all of your questions ref: medical separation will be answered and look forward to receiving an update which will be helpful for all who are still here and will come here in the future. Thank you for being a part of the GM group and Great Lakes Q and A. Your friend Gary T.
Susan, I was so saddened to hear about Marissa's injury. I will remove her off my list, but she will definitely not be forgotten. I will keep both of you in my prayers and loving thoughts. Please do update us as her healing progresses. Big Navy Grandma HUGS to both of you....Vee
Congratulations to Sammi. I have heard of Siganello, Italy. Its on almost every Pizza Box I have seen. Give Sammi my best. I can see why she is happy. Gary t.
Michele, congratulations to Sammi on her orders to Italy. I'm so glad she is excited about it. This should be quite an adventure for her and she will love Italy. Thanks for sharing the news with us....Hugs, Vee
My name is April and my son is in Div. 039 ship 03 and will be PIR'd on the 30th of Dec.'09. I was told that he would be going right to A school upon graduation. He has enlisted as Gunner's Mate. What happens when he is through with school there? Will he be able to come home before being sent off to a Navy Station, how do you determine where they are stationed at?
Hi April and WELCOME to our GM forum. If you will read back on some of the first posts on this forum, you will get a good grasp of what to expect for your son. BTW, I need your son's name so I can add the two of you to the list here. During the next few months, he will come up with a "dream list"...on which he can add places he would like to be assigned to upon the completion of school. It doesn't seal in concrete that he will get one of those and it seems the better they do in A school they get to pick first on the list of openings. This has been how it has worked this past year. It remains tho that they will be sent to where the Navy needs them. There has been a lot of hold times between phases this last year, but I do not know if that will continue this year. He gets 2-1/2 days a month leave and I do believe they are given extra days leave when they transfer; i.e., my Michael completed A school on September 18, 2009, and he just got the hard copy of his orders Friday eve. He will be leaving GL soon and going to C School in San Diego. Then he will report to his ship in Hawaii in June. So, he has been in GL since Nov. 12, 2008 overall. Michael plans on taking approx. 2 weeks leave at home in California before reporting to San Diego. I hope this has helped some. I would recommend you read the early posts by Bill Sick and Gary T..both fathers of GMs as they did a great job in keeping track of their sons' progress through the GL training center. I am going on vacation for 3 weeks, and won't be back on the site until after January 10th. MERRY CHRISTMAS and do let me know your son's name. Big Navy Grandma Hugs to you, Vee
