Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

I did get the Facebook page worked out.  I was looking under Find Friends instead of Pages.  I did make friends with the NSA Bahrain Sponsor page by accident but now "like" the NSA Bahrain page.  Thanks for the help!  I've also ordered my materials from the post office.  My son was non cooperative about going through his belongings before he left so I have to make a trip up to the attic and dig through boxes to get his stuff to send.  It's been unseasonable cold in Texas and I've been slow to do it.  Heck, it took me 4 months to get it packed up and put up there!  This may be the link.  Thanks ladies!

Morning ladies!

Laurie, any luck on the FB page? I wish I was tech savvy enough to know how to post a link. Anyone know how?!

BUT!  The LARGE Priority box goes for $13.45, no matter how much it weighs! (up to 70 pounds).  $13.45 is the rate for sending it to military:)  We always use that box, because it is so cheap and we don't have to worry about the weight, and can fit plenty in it (unless of course you are sending something small).

Hi Laurie;  You can ship a larger box, I did when my daughter first got there. It is a bit spendy but to get them started it is worth it. Any movies are fine there are no regulations. Section will be the  people he works with usually a color and a number, my daughter just moved out of sections. Don't waste the extra money on priority once it hits the military post office it is on there time. I am in Oregon I have found if I ship it on wednesday she usually has it within a week :) Good luck to you! And welcome to the group

When you search "NSA Bahrain" it is the first one that comes up. Has about 1,603 followers. The profile photo is the base's Seal.

Mail takes from ten to fourteen days. I use "If it Fits, It Ships" boxes. Easier all around to handle. Remember, he'll have to carry it from the PO to his billet! Call 1-800-610-8734 & ask for a Military Care Kit. They will deliver it to your house. It includes all sizes of boxes, shipping labels, tape, custom forms & holders. You'll be charged for postage in the States, (so how it goes only counts here), then the NAVY takes over. I've learned to deconstruct things to enable shipping! I still send the box, but it's folded more compactly. You'll be surprised how proficient you'll become!!! Just sent one today. No fillers added, it didn't rattle & nothing moved inside. YES!

Section is the group he'll work through, mine is MA, his is a color/number. I put it at the last of his address info. Oh! NEVER put the country on an address as it may go into the Bahraini mail system.

So I'm wondering about the Facebook page.  When I put NSA Bahrain it comes up NSA Sponsor.  Is it the same thing?  My son is an MA in Bahrain and has been there since Dec. 19th.  He says that he hasn't been doing much yet.  Says he's not in a "section" yet (whatever that is).  I'm putting together a box of stuff to send him.  He couldn't fit much in his bag.  Are there restrictions of DVD's (rated R)?  Do I have to send items in the post office boxes or can I send a bigger box.  I can't fit much in there!  Anyone know how long it takes for them to get a box and does it depend if it's sent priority or parcel post?

Oooooo, has anyone else poked that little "More" just to the right above this comment box!!

Annie...Awesome isn't it! So proud of them all.

Dmk828...Go to Facebook and search NSA Bahrain. It should come up and just scroll down until you get to December 11 I think. Then you will see the pictures and titles of Frocking for each class. Let me know if you find it. Hopes this helps
