Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

I assume the NAVY Fed kiosk is where he gets help with the check. As for the K-cup; go to BB&B (Bed, bath & Beyond) to get Medelco Universal Single Serve packet (2) replacement coffee filters ($8.99) which are used with the "My K-cup" insert. I got them for my Kurig when the one it came with finally gave out. I buy bulk coffee much cheaper & load my own. I keep K-cups on hand for guests to use on their own!

Sorry about the acronym (MWD), yep, my son is a professional Chew toy! It's also one of his nickname(s)! I picked out, for Mr. Grim, a deep purple Kong, a really durable USA made dog toy. A favorite, obsession/reward, of these powerful, beautiful, lethal partners. Got Kong!?

Chriswick.......what thoughtful ideas! Did you get the Cashiers check at your local bank? Can they just take that to NEX and cash? I was thinking about those single serve Kuerig coffee makers for the flat, what do you think? I will have to see if the NEX sells coffee in the k-cup pkg. It would be so fast and easy to make on the run. How do you get the NEX gift card?
Thanks again!

We're into our third year in the sand. Generally, it takes 12 - 14 days. Flat rate Fit it Ships is wonderful! For linens & towels, Space Bags help & the "kids" can reuse them! His first year we picked up a little tree from WalMart, each year we include an ornament for it. I send food stuffs that he may not find on the island, favorite candies, iTunes cards, tiny earphone jack speaker, cool t-shirts. NEX cards are nice. I also find childhood favorites, like Hot Wheels cars, Legos, etc. I also found him a Melita single serve drip mug for coffee since his shifts don't always let him get coffee when he wants or needs it. Also, sent a thermos over so he can make some to take with! Got him little niceties for his flat's kitchen; cutting board, timer, towels, etc., did it like as a housewarming pkg. this year I found cute, compact earbud wrappers to add to his pkg. we also send a cashier check so he can make his own choice of things he may not spend on for himself. Funny, last year, he got his pkgs on time but groused that he couldn't comment on what we'd sent like the year prior because I'd wrapped everything! He would wait for the big day. I did it again this year, but left a few things unwrapped!

We have sent about 3 boxes so far and they take about a week and a half to two weeks. I sent the last box on Saturday. Haven't heard from him to know if it made it there yet or not. I sent through the post office and the postmaster had a chart. He said it should be there no later than Dec 4. I'll let you know when he gets it. We are getting ready to send another package so I hope the delivery time stays about the same.

Everyone have a great weekend.

Has anyone sent food items? Just sent our son his first package and gearing up to send another. He wants a blanket for his berth on the ship and I found a nice soft one on Overstock.com for $29 which I will send via flat rate at post office.
Here's something interesting.. While in Bahrain, our son said that he joined a soccer team that was "in the playoffs." He was excited about being able to comoete in a team sport. There is apparently a soccer league and there are teams including players from the Coast Guard, the Base Workers, locals, and Navy. He bought new cleats and a soccer ball at a 'huge mall'. There are practices throughout the week and he goes when he can based on his watch schedule (which us currently every third night. Good diversion and meet new people!

Priority boxes always take right about 2 weeks.  Has anyone noticed if sending Parcel Post makes a time difference?  The PO lady told me she didn't think so, because they don't send anything by boat anymore....

Skype with video turned off gives perfect quality phone call, when they are near wifi:)  WhatsApp app is excellent for texting.
