Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Chris can be a rowdy, he was a HS bandie on the drumline. He just won't share things he deems "need to know". Most of what he knows no one needs to know! lol, lol

LOL  I'll tell her to be on the lookout for Gary Cooper MA3!  LOL

Sheila -My Chris (aka "gary cooper") is MA3, in Bahrain 18 months, in NAVY 24 months early Feb.

"Gary Cooper" cuz he's the strong, silent type, (doesn't even talk to himself - lol, probably would get along with Mom2's baby girl, wouldn't have to shoot him if she told him stuff : )

Loved "kitty box"!

It IS a cop thing. The MAA's are the ones to hate when sailors are getting in trouble, but the ones needed & called on to get sailors out of trouble! Chris (Bahrain) says "they" sometimes "get it" & have become good friends.

Hi All. Adam bought his prepaid cards in Bahrain, the minutes are not that high. I have the international plan on my Verizon phone for 3.95/mo. the phone calls are like 37 cents a minute. It is only on my phone, since I always have it with me. Adam is still at sea, I think they are away from the Straight the Iranians are threatening to close, but I am sure all eyes are on that event. He had to buy all his Starbucks cards there, etc, and sent back his to me---has to do with their money. I just transfer money to his bank for gifts, it is easier than sending money or something that breaks in the mail. He lost a few things via FPO mailing---wrap things good!!!

@Nancy.. she flew out military from Norfolk. This is her first post.  I am not sure why the mix up with how long she is there for and what she thought. Her instructors at C school told her it was a year, then when she got there they looked at her original orders. I really don't know, somewhere something wasn't clear! LOL  She stopped in Portugal and Italy on her way.  She left 10PM on Mon. and got there 1:30AM Wed. Bahrain Time.  They (her LPO) made her get a pre-paid phone when she got there.  She is IS (intel specialist) and I really don't know ALOT of what she does or anything! LOL I'll ask her basic questions, or so I think, and she'll say.. "can't tell you"!  We have ALOT of those conversations!   She also isn't told alot, so this may be some of why it was unclear on her exact stay.  We've dealt with alot of that also, a lot of "not knowing"!  :)   She did call again yesterday and sounded good.  She's trying to get her internet set up and had to go to MWR for that.  Doing indoc for the next 2 weeks.

Poor Tarzan would go hungry! Chris has terminal no A at all, nothing to bite!!!! Although, Toucci's Cherry has gnawed on an arm, leg, etc. and Donna's Steve's Leo had tasted the elusive, yet, tasty, MA3 Wickline.
Comment by Miss Suzanne on December 29, 2011 at 10:25pm
Chris - he wants to be a chewtoy for another year?! Maybe they should transfer Tarzan - and his titanium teeth - to Bahrain..... ;) lol!
