Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

found out today that if my husband gets stationed in the states for his next duty assignment, he will have to be on a ship, do mobile security, or air squadron. Can anything else go wrong?! Looks like I will be moving to Italy possibly in the next couple years..

Christine and all...thank you for the warm welcome to this group. Since his graduation, Florida and now Virginia, we have not been too worried. I am now very nervous about the Bahrain deployment (son's first).

Christine, I don't think we are going to make it to say good-bye to our son when he leaves for Bahrain, but if I would, I would be crying too! However we just found out today he will be able to come home in June - before leaving. We struggle with the minimal information he gives us. I think he is trying so hard to be independent.

I appreciate the update about the POA. Should I try to get while he is home? Others have told me that the military will handle before he leaves, but I don't know how I will get that information from him. Maybe a self-addressed envelope and he can just drop in the mail once completed?

Those goodbyes are awful. Alex & I were messes, pulled off on the roadside & sobbed. Chris even cried openly, very rare. Your son will sound awful on the first call, trip is brutal, he'll sound better on the 2nd. He'll have time to aclimatize. & learn customs of the base & area. BTW your boss hasn't been pregnant or been a Mom so he's got no clue. In true "southern terms"; "Bless his heart, for being a dolt about your day off. Good grief! Hang in there sister.

I am new to this group and wondering if someone can help me decide if this is the place for me to find out more info. Without saying the wrong thing, we know my son will be sent to Bahrain end of June, but apparently he will not be with the Navy, but instead Marine base. Does anyone in this group have experience with this? Are all of your sons/daughters the same or do I just not understand.

We are hoping he can come home for a visit first, but leave has not been approved.

Help: He has a car in Virginia. We are thinking he will have to drive home to store as the Navy is telling him they will not store, but he could rent something. Does anyone have hints for me on this. I am not sure if we should try to fly out there to drive home ourselves. I really don't do well with unanswered questions.

All our hearts beat with yours, all our arms ache with yours, all our eyes take in our children's countenance for memory & cry with yours. We know your pain, yet also your strengths. Remember, you have Sisters here, if & when needed. <3

"Stevesmom(Donna)- heard Chris is now "kennel support" & very happy about it! Wonder if his room got moved because of that? Missed his call today while I was teaching, darned school is like a bunker - no signal inside. I did get his voice mail saying things were busy. Days he'll call tomorrow, no nb for me so far! Got 5th Fleet on FB & saw thT "something big" was in port, no wonder they're busy.
